Most Sony Vaio systems will have a VAIO recovery wizard. Create a Recovery Media Kit using this wizard and you’ll be able to create a set of CDs that will enable you to do a system recovery on your Sony VAIO machine.
If your PC does not have this feature, you can always call Sony at 1-800-488-SONY to have them send you the disks.

Once you have either created or ordered and received the CDs necessary to restore your Sony VAIO computer, you’ll need to place the first CD in the drive and reboot the machine. The recovery process will immediately begin when the system boots. If it does not begin, you may have to enter the BIOS of the computer to change the boot sequence to the CD ROM instead of the hard drive. To enter the BIOS, tap the F2 key numerous times when booting.

REMEMBER... when you use the recoery system, it will restore your computer to it's ORIGINAL configuration from the factory. All data and programs you have installed will be GONE!

The Sony Recovery will ONLY recover to your original computer. It's their way of fighting software piracy.

Upgrade to vista ultimate

If you have a full version of Windows Vista Ultimate, you can just insert the DVD when you logged in your laptop and go to Computer(My Computer) and lauch the installer for Windows on DVD icon (Double Click DVD icon). It will give you the main window for installing Windows and along the way, you should find an Upgrade option. Click that one and it will install windows Ultimate on your system. It Will not format the laptop but installer will just add system files and features to the laptop to run Vista Ultimate.

**If you haven't purhcase a Windows Vista Ultimate Disc, check this link to to purchase just an upgrade Disc (only) of Vista Ultimate.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/anytime-upgrade-overview.aspx

An upgrade disc will also not format the laptop instead it will just install additional features and add additional files on the system to run Windows Vista Ultimate

Does the fj270 recovery disk from ebay make the computer like new with a blank harddrive?

I am assuming you are going back to XP?
You will run into one major problem with this process, Vista is based of Windows NT which uses a NTFS file system. XP uses the old file system of FAT32, so just wiping the hard drive probably won't work. You will have to go into your partition and re-partition your hard drive before you intall the recovery disk.
If the recovery disk is designed for your computer then yes it will restore it to all factory defaults (including drivers and software that originally came with it.
If you are not sure how to do the partition then let me know I will try to guide you through it.

Help fix my laptop

Nope, there is currently no support for that within Vista, try using the XP driver directly; and when installing it click on "Continue Anyway".

Good luck!
