So i have a Toshiba 1 tb external hdd(px1396e-3t01) for almost 8 months now. It worked perfectly until yesterday evening. I was watching southpark from it and suddenly the led which supposed to light blue turned red and stayed that way for a while. i turned it off and on and then i saw the blue led for less than a second as i turned it on. Afterwards the red light was there for another 2 mins and when it finally changes into blue my comp doesnt have any reactions at all! its not seeing the hdd now eventho the led is blue.. so what should i do?

well i've already tried it on 4 other systems but non of them even made any noises.. that was for solution 1. as for solution 2, they really are useful things to know but since i've learned them long before i got an external hdd, i didnt do anythn opposite of whats above. i always use the same Usb 2.0 port and the original cables and adaptor came along with the hdd itself. i also have checked the hardware manager to see if anythin was off and there were no problems at all. when i listen to my ext hdd it sounds like it is working properly. but of course this is my opinion and since i may not have a clue how a hdd sounds when working properly, i may be wrong :)

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

If its under warranty it may be time to take it back.

    If not !

Open the enclosure and check its connections and try again.

If that does not work then pull it from the enclosure and hook it up to a suitable PC and check it directly.

If its still no deal the drive has issues.

My XP will not boot when my Hitachi 1TB External USB 2.0 drive is connected. It gets as far as showing the Pentium screen and stalls.

Its probably trying to boot from your external drive.

Go into your bios and reset your boot setting to HDD0 as your first boot device, Disk drive 0 second and floppy third, unless you want to boot from an external drive. That being the case select an appropriate order.

If the bios shows your external HDD as HDD0, then you have to work out which is the drive carrying the operating system and set that to your first boot device.

To get into the bios, watch the boot screen for a key to hit to enter setup, normally its the "DEL" key.

Improper power supply will cause the malfunction of the HDD. Try to coordinate with vendor/dealer who provided the product and repair the same.

Hope this gives you the information you need

Toshiba StorE ALU 3.5" external HDD stops out of the blue.

Toshiba could only replace my HD after destroying the data on it, So I just bought a separate empty HD casing instead and opened the Toshiba casing and took out the Western Digital Harddisk. The harddisk was perfectly working, It seems that the Toshiba controller in their casing got messed up. (Never a Toshiba for me, because by solving the problem myself in the appropriate manner I lost their useless warranty).
