The plastic partition iside the waste basket is broken,therefore the shredder won't engage unless it makes contact with the top of the shredder .other than that the shredder itself woks fine.
I guess I would need a new basket?

You can only buy new one or block a microswitch inside. Basket from Fellowes PS-67Cs can be used too. If you use this shredder privately just block the microswitch.
Here is some general advice. Shredders have an interlock to be sure they don't run while the basket is not in place. They don't want you holding the head unit and it starts running and shreds your fingers. So you need to look for the switch that tells the head unit that it is in place over the basket. I'm guessing here but it might be something like a little plastic protrusion that pushes into the head unit to activate a swith. It is possible that the little plastic piece is broken and is not activating the head unit. That would explain why the display thinks that the basket is ajar or misaligned. BE CAREFUL if you tinker with the interlock and be sure it is unplugged!! That is an ORDER!
I had the same problem. I super-glued the pieces togeter and allowed them to dry completely (over night). Then I super-glued two strips of plastic perpendicular to the original brake and allowed to dry completely. It has worked for several years without difficulty. I was unable to find the broken part. However, if I had a plastic injection moulder, I would make them and sell them for $20 each; free postage. Good Luck David
took the shredder section apart, cleaned out the gears of paper and a broken mount (plastic piece), and hand turned the electric motor to free it up. After assembly, the ready light works and so does the FWD/REV directions for shredding.
Make sure that the shredder is locked down in its case by pushing down on all 4 corners.
Since the basket slides forward to empty it, I would think the safety switch is located in the front but not positive since I don't have a unit right in front of me.
Check to see if you see a slot in the top part of the shredder unit. Usually the basket has a piece of plastic that will line up with the slot when the basket is in place (Safety switch) so that the top part of the shredder knows that the basket is in place.
Look around with a flashlight, If you are going to feel around with your hand, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG the shredder just to be safe.
Your problem is probally with the safety interlock switch on your machine. On the PS-65c It is located on the right hand side of the unit. There will be a tab of plastic on the inside lip of the basket that goes into a slot on shredder head. If plastic piece is bent or broken machine will not operate. If it does not appear broken make sure when you put shredder head on that it fits flush all the way around on the basket. Check to make sure the shredder is sitting on the paper bin properly. Most shredders have a sensor switch that disables the unit if it's not properly seated on the paper bin.
usually this indicates that the bin has not been properly put in place. On the inside of the waste basket there is a plastic piece that fits up into a slot on the shredder head This is our safety interlock. If plastic tab is bent or broken machine will not run without safety interlock engaged.
