The current models of automatic standby generators will have LED indicator lights on the side compartment of the generator. A green LED light will indicate that the unit is in AUTO mode and is ready to run, or is running properly during a utility outage. The yellow LED light will indicate that maintenance is needed. The red LED will indicate either that the unit is switched to OFF or that there is an alarm detected. If a yellow or red LED are present, you will need to check the generator's control panel, as it will describe the type of maintenance needed or the alarm present.
