Question about LaCie Computers & Internet

Open Question

I have a 16X LIGHTSCRIBE DL d2 DVDRW FW that is making a clucking sound and the MacPro Computer will not recognize the drive. The power supply lights up. Running Snow Leopard but do not think that has anything to do with it. The computer froze up on restart while connected to the drive. Also the last label burn that I had with the drive was a solid band and no text.

CD TRAY DOES NOT OPEN WHEN CLICKED ON

Does it have a small hole anywhere on the front? Using a spread out paper clip, gently insert end of clip (now a wire) into hole and press gently, should release tray. Can do it with power off or on, but reccomend off.

If you can open MY Computer or Windows Explorer or some other file system viewer, right click the cd/dvd and select "Eject".

Is there a software update for lightscribe for lacie d2 blue ray burner, so that I can burn dvd titles on a disc?

When you say "burn dvd titles on a disc", do you mean to write (laser-etch) the name of the movie on the plastic disk? I am assuming that is what you mean. If not, please describe what you mean. . No, LaCie does not make a Blu-Ray LightScribe drive. This is a technology/hardware problem, not a software problem. . There are a small number of internal (I know you want external) Blu-Ray burners with Lightscribe hardware built in. Here is one: LG LightScribe GGW-H20L Blu-Ray DVD Sata Drive. . The Lightscribe website says no such media exists, even though the drives have been available since June of last year: http://lightscribe.com/products/index.aspx?id=106 Watch that site for info about the media. Once the media is available, you will be able to buy the external drive you want. . Here is a burner for only $4,400 (that is not a typo):http://www.meritline.com/sharkblu-lightscribe-8x-blu-ray-dvd-duplicator-1-11---p-35937.aspx . OK, it is a duplicator (burns up to 11 copies at once), hence the high price, but useless without the media. . BTW - It is a simple matter to buy an external USB2 or FW case and put an internal burner in that case to make an external drive. . --Dave

Power cord buzzes and MACPro does not recognize it

This is a fault in the power supply itself, I have just repaired one of these power supplies successfully.
The fault is caused by the failure of the filter capacitors on the 12V supply rail, and if the power supply is left connected to the mains supply (In our case 240V 50Hz) without the drive connected as a load, the unloaded output voltage will exceed the voltage rating of the capacitors, causing their failure. The failed capacitors had very obvious bulges at the top, and one was beginning to leak onto the PCB.

The filter capacitors on the 12V supply rail are rated at 16V, and the cpacitors on the 5V rail are rated at 10V, and when operated without a load, the 12V rail rises to approximately 19V, and the 5V rail rises to approximately 8V. All output filter capacitors are 1000uF, and 105deg C temperature rated.

I repaired my power supply by replacing all of the filter capacitors on the DC low voltage output rails with 1000uF 25V capacitors. Be careful to only fit the 105 deg C rated caps, as they operate at elevated temperatures in an enclosed environment with no ventillation to cool the power supply.
To ensure that the repair was reliable, I also replaced the filter capacitor on the 5V rail with the same 1000uF 25V, even though that capacitor showed no immediate signs of failure.

When reassembling the power supply, care must be taken to ensure that parts like the ferrite cored transformer are thermally bonded to the aluminium heatsink with a smear of heatsink compound.
When the power supply was first powered up following repair, everything was normal, the green power LED came on as usual, the supply outputs both came up OK, and the unit was not making any buzzing sounds, completely silent. The HDD now operated as normal when once again powered from this power supply.

This was the fix for my particular LaCie power supply model ACU057A-0512, and the supply once again works normally.

Just bought a lacie d2 dvd +/- rw, store bought dvd movies don't mount and therefore don't play

Disconnect the Lacie dvd drive, then reconnect it and open "system profiler" to see if the drive is now recognized under "firewire" or USB depending on your connection. If that doesn't work disconnect all peripherals and turn off your mac for 5 minutes. Start reconnecting your devices one by one.

LaCie DVD Burner Not Doing Much of Anything

You should check for corruption of your CD/DVD burning software from whereever you got it. Sometimes some burning software isn't good enough to work adequately. I'd test some new burning software to see if that is the problem, if upbrading your burning software doesn;t do the trick. You can downlowad free trials of Roxio, NTI, and other good burners to test this hypothesis. And, of course, try calling LaCie support.
