If you replaced the speed switch with a dimmer control or a lighting control device it will not work properly. You specifically require a fan control switch.

Ceiling fan speed chain broke off while fan was off. Replaced the 3-speed 4-wire switch with same type and rewired as before. Now fan only has 1 low speed. Could capacitor have gotten damaged?

capacitor tis toast. Have done what you did once. Just remember if/when replacing it...
The capacitor leads are color coded but the motor leads may not be! Tag the motor leads with colored tape before disconnecting the old capacitor, if necessary. Been there too! Differ by brands whether they are color coded.

What westinghouse 3 speed ceiling fan switch replaces a K T E E87488 ceiling fan switch

Hello Joanne,

Sorry for the late reply. Some 3-speed switches are as easy to replace as giving me the model number and serial number of the fan and plugging a new one in. In most cases though, we ask the customer to write down the color code (which colored wires go where in the switch) then I have to break open the switch to identify it. Since I field phone calls from all over the US and Canada, I ask the customer to mail me the switch. You can reach me toll-free at 1-866-600-3267.

it sounds like the new switch has a different pin out or you got it wired wrong? is the motor jamed up, will it turn by hand,,,the humming sound you here is curent running through the motor windings,, if it cant turn its going to get very hot,, it could burn the motor out,, have another look at the wiring
