ensure your dishwasher pump and drain hose are unobstructed. If your machine does not drain it will not refill with fresh rinse water and since it can't do that the cycle will never finish.
Many people don't completely rinse off food stuffs from their dishware, expecting the dishwasher to take care of it. To be honest, a dishwasher is more of a fine cleaning and disinfecting device than a pot scrubber. Because of this, grease, food debris, etc can clog the pump or drain line over time. be sure to use a good de-greasing agent regularly once the flow of water has been cleared (don't wash your dishes with it however)
Make sure the center loading is not obstructing the water jet to the top shelf. Top shelf is only for glasses and saucers , use Jet-Dry .Pre rinse and clean bottom pan strainer from dirtdebris.
You need to check the drain system completely, look for plugged screens, pump impellers, valves and the drain hose. You need to witness a large volume of water flow during drain.
I would not recommend using acid in a dishwasher it could lead to premature seal failure and damage the internal components.
There are cleaners that can be used that are dishwasher safe such as Lemi-Shine, Glisten, Rinse Aid dishwasher cleaner etc. Vinegar works pretty good too.
Depending on what the symptoms were a pump cleaning may be needed, before you act check out these tips I put together, feel free to send me a message back with any questions.
You do not have to take it apart to clean it. You can run it a couple of times with dishwasher tablet and it will self clean. In general I recommend rinsing the food off of the dishes and silverware before placing items into the dishwasher. Also, run the hot water in the sink until it gets hot and then turn on the dishwasher. good luck with it.
