I have a compaq 1247 laptop. I had problems after I took it apart. It was very difficult to get the processor chip back in properly, the little clip has to "snap" in place to hold the chip firmly in the socket. That solved my problem.

Hey Mike

Go back and check the fine cabling that connects LED indicaters to motherborad. There's got to be a small cable you forgot to plug into the board to feed back poer state. Take your time and check everything twice.

1) The jack your AC adapter plugs into on the motherboard, is the DC Power Jack.
Motherboard out of case, power to motherboard, take your multimeter and see if you are getting 19 VDC at the DC Power Jack's positive solder joint, on motherboard.

The center pin of the jack is Positive. (The inner cylindrical shell is Negative)
Follow the DC Power Jack's positive pin from the Center of the jack, to the motherboard.

You probably won't be able to touch your meter's Positive (Red) probe, to the DC Power Jack's positive pin under the jack; so touch it's solder joint on the opposite side of the motherboard.
(DC Power Jack should be soldered close to the motherboard, is why)

Of course also touch the Negative lead, (Black probe), of your meter, to the Negative, (Ground) solder joint for the DC Power Jack.

Getting 19 volts DC?

See if there is a cracked solder joint, for any of the DC Power Jack's pin connections to the motherboard.
ANY perceptible movement of the DC Power Jack on the motherboard, indicates a bad power jack, and may indicate a broken/cracked solder joint.

2) DC Power Jack is determined to be in good repair? No cracked/broken solder joints?

Compaq presario cq61 will not stay turned on.

For this kind of issue, please follow up the following steps to check:

1.confirm the battery and ac adapter connect the laptop normally.Maybe the bad connect lead to this problem. If there are no lights when you turn on laptop, one of possible reason is that your adapter is malfunction.

2.the second possible cause is laptop dc jack failure. If the dc jack is broken or loose, you are required to replace it or repair it.

3.Another possible reason is that there is something wrong with laptop motherboard. For this situation, it includs two kinds of possibility,a failure in an electronic circuit and BGA malfunction.

For more detailed reasons and solutions, please have a look at the following article:

The power plug is loose and i cant get a good connection

You need to replace the dc jack. This could be a solder on the board type or plugged into the motherboard. Either way, the part cost is only about £4.00, as long as you are capable of dismantling and soldering it is a cheap enough repair

No light when charger connected to laptop.

You do not have to resolder the connection, the dc jack is attached to the motherboard via a cable and plug. You can purchase these on Ebay for under 20 bucks. Below is the link to the disassebly guide that will assist you.

Dc jack is not working, can I still use a docking

I have seen this problem with many laptops.
What has happened is that the power connector on the laptop has loose solder connections and will not trasfer the power through the jack. Either the jack needs to be resoldered on the motherboard or replaced. This is a very intense repair, because the motherboard has to be removed for the repair.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.
If you need further assistance please comment to this post and I will try to help you further.

My compaq presario will not power up (no power). I have swapped and tried a different power supply. No luck

Could be one of a few things. I'm assuming this is a presario laptop, not a desktop.

System needs to be restarted - Remove the battery and let the laptop sit a while (30 minutes). Reinstall battery and plug in power supply and see if it works. If not,

Remove the Battery and see if it is charged up (there are a set of green lights on most compaq laptop batteries with a spot to push to confirm the battery is charged). If it isn't charged, you very likely have a bad DC Jack connector on the laptop motherboard. If you apply pressure to the cord which plugs into your laptop (up and down, side to side) at the spot where the cord is connected (back of the laptop), see if the power light, on the front of the laptop, comes on for second. If it does, you can fix this by buying the DC Jack for your laptop model on ebay ($10) and removing the old connector and installing, soldering in, the new connector. This will require you to take your laptop apart. (note: Search the internet for the service manual for your laptop and this will give step by step directions on how to do this.)

Also, I think they do this at Best Buy (Nerd Herd) if you aren't comfortable doing ($75)

If it's not the DC Jack, it's a problem with the motherboard / CPU / Power Inverter or something else, most likely not worth your time to fix. You could sell the laptop for parts on ebay to recoup as much of your cost as possible, then buy another.

If you are slightly mechanical and are looking for a project and don't need the laptop immediately, you could buy the individual parts and replace piecemeal, based on directions from the service manual. FYI - I've picked up a few laptops for next to nothing and repaired this way {Compaq Evo n620c (CPU / DC Jack), IBM T22 (LCD Screen), Compaq M700 (DC Jack)}.

Compaq Presario 1200 won't charge battery

dear N9YK

you can follow this

If you have a loose connection where you plug in the power on your laptop, or it works intermittently, you could have a bad dc jack. Symptoms
  • Move the power plug and the laptop loses connection
  • Broken or cracked dc jack
  • Laptop won't charge but worked on battery
  • Power LED and battery LED flicker when the adapter tip is moved
  • Battery won't charge
  • Sparks come out the back of the laptop
Why does this happen?
  • Flaw in manufacturer designs
  • Use of universal or non-original ac adapter
  • Lots of plugging and unplugging of the ac adapter
  • Tripping on or pulling the ac adapter cord
or you can check your dc amper in your adaptor

oke

thx
