I have new batteries for my model dt121 timer. I need to know which way the batteries should be placed in the timer

The timer has 3 settings ON, OFF, and TIMER. To control the load manually, place the slide switch in the

"ON" or "OFF" position. To use the timer,

1. Place the slide switch in the "TIMER" position
2. Rotate the dial Clockwise until the desired time lines up with the arrow in the center dial.

I'm not sure what timer you have.
Programmable timers are made so you press-and-hold the button, and then display goes up through the numbers as you describe.
I test timers, and have not seen the fault you describe. 4-6% of timers arrive defective.
However you have several timers that do the same thing.
If you press the button once, then the first number shows, press button again and next number shows.

If your timer is going up through the number with one push of the button then try resetting timer.
I cannot identify your timer to know what the reset steps are.

Also, many timers you push the + button to go up through the numbers, and push the - button to go down through the numbers > try both buttons since one may be made for individual selection and other for acceleration through all numbers.
If timer operates on 120V, perform circuit analyzer test on the circuit to eliminate electrical as source of problem.
If this is a hard-wire timer, carefully review of wiring.

Question: Is this old timer that started malfunctioning?

If this is older timer, that worked correctly before, then the timer has gone bad.
You can reset timer, and then re-programming.
But without knowing which timer, it's hard to say if timer has reset button or if you hold down two buttons to perform the reset.
Add a comment with better description of timer: plug-in, outdoor, in-wall, programmable, or dial-type.
Describe buttons and location exactly.
Is there a switch on the side? Or a slide button on top.
Is outlet 3-prong? How many outlets? Are outlets on front of timer or sides?
Nobody carries repair parts for old timers.

I can probably find new model with same features

If this is new installation, and timer replaces wall switch, it sounds like the wiring is wrong or timer is busted.
Again I need a very specific description of the timer, and the timer wires, and the wires inside box, and the switch it replaced.

There are 100's of timers out there, in all shapes and sizes, with different features ... and I know most of them.
But need more info.

Most plug-in timers have rechargeable battery that is not replaceable.
Instructions say: Plug in timer for hour and then unplug it to set programs.
Intermatic makes a couple plug-in outdoor timers with replaceable batteries that load from back of timer, but otherwise batteries are rechargeable.
If battery will not charge, then display doesn't show, and that signals the timer is no good.
Take timer back if you can, and exchange for another.

I was looking at timers in Walmart and Target yesterday (since my specialty, and interest is timers).
New plug-in timers are inexpensive.
Lowes and Home Depot also carry inexpensive plug-in timers.

Be sure to save timer instructions because generally, store-bought timer brands don't show manuals on-line. Except GE brand timers from Home Depot.

Intermatic does not show DT11
Intermatic shows the DT121 is no longer available

If the display shows and you can set programs, then the battery is good.
Does the manual override work? This indicates whether the timer on-off switch operates.
If manual override does not work, then I discovered that timers are no longer any good

Programming:
Set present time
Then set ON time for program 1
Set OFF time for program 1
Then set ON time for program 2
Set OFF time for program 2
Most timers will not function if there is a conflict in programming > for example Program 1 says ON at 6 and OFF at 7 and Program 2 says opposite or has overlapping times
When events are set, press SET once > this will put timer in RUN mode

If manual override works, and you set programming correctly, but timer does not carry out instructions, I guess the timer is no good.

Both the timer and the knob is replaceable.
Locate the model number of the unit. Here's info on how to find it:

You can get the timer and the knob from www.searspartsdirect.com or call 1-800-252-1698.
Once you have the part, remove the screws from the back of the control panel, removing the back cover. From there you should see the timer. It will either have one wiring harness or many wires attached to the timer. INSURE UNIT IS UNPLUGGED WITH NO POWER TO IT. If there is a harness, unplug the harness. The timer will be held in place either by a couple screws on the front of the control panel that is normally hidden by the knob AND/OR a screw INSIDE the control panel at the timer. There could also be a plastic tab holding the timer in place. Raise this tab and turn timer until it is free. Remove timer and put new timer in place. Fit harness onto timer.
If there are many wires attached to the old timer, I would hold the new timer in my hand and transfer the wires one-by-one to insure you get the right wires on the right terminal tab. Once wires are transferred, remove old timer and put new timer in place.
At this point. put new knob on the timer on the front of the control panel. Plug unit in, stay clear of exposed wiring, and test dryer. If it works, replace back cover and you are done.
If it doesn't work, further troubleshooting will be needed and Ill need the make and model number.

The battery is not easily replaceable. It's a 1.2 volt, 80ma Nickel-metal hydride battery, that is soldered to the circuit board. I opened the back of the switch to find the battery. The one in this switch was in bad shape. It looks like the battery broke apart, but wasn't leaking. The switch is less then a year old. Bad design.

I just opened this up today and am going to look for a replacement battery. But soldering will obviously be involved to get the a new battery back in place.

On the new timer , you have 2 wires comming of the timer motor . The blue wire should go to one of these terminals on the timer itself . The place where there is ONLY a timer motor wire going to , is where it should go .
