To answer your question, this sounds like either a driver or firmware problem with the scanner. You can download the latest driver for your scanner from the HP support site here (
click here) and download the available firmware upgrade for your scanner as well from the same location.
I would check to make sure that you have the latest driver first, and install that first if you do not. Then I would install the firmware upgrade immediately after, since it seems to fix the error that you are experiencing:
"Scanner hangs and does not respond when scanning many pages from the flatbed."
