Thank you for writing a complete question that we are able to understand. It's nice to see a well worded question on here for a change.

To answer your question, this sounds like either a driver or firmware problem with the scanner. You can download the latest driver for your scanner from the HP support site here (click here) and download the available firmware upgrade for your scanner as well from the same location.

I would check to make sure that you have the latest driver first, and install that first if you do not. Then I would install the firmware upgrade immediately after, since it seems to fix the error that you are experiencing:

"Scanner hangs and does not respond when scanning many pages from the flatbed."

Good luck and thanks again for the well worded question!

Failure in initialization of Scanner. Scanner is offline or , scanner is turned off.

First check if the scanner is working in 'offline' mode by 'counting' a few pages.
Connect to the comp, if SCSI is the interface, you need to start the scanner first, if USB you can connect the scanner even after comp powering on. If the scanner is not recognised, reinstall driver software and scanning software.

Audiovox 6700, turn on, stuck on initial screen.

your operating system probably crashed. you can goto the UT Starcom website and download the operations system. make sure you select the proper carrier. it is a very simple process that will show you step by step on how to re-flash your software. it will erase everything on the phone and put it back to factory settings. if it is a sprint ppc6700 feel free to call us or stop in our store and we will take a look at it for you. 317.337.0030 M-F 9-6 Sat 11-2

3 lights were flashing, now no lights flashing & not on

it is always handy to state the brand and the type of connection when referring a fault.
if its USB the check in ctrl panel DEVICE MANAGER if there is a yellow exclamation mark.
same for serial ...against the scanner

if this exclamation is there it means that it does not recognise the scanner and will need to be reinstalled.
check that the serial plug is on firmly, both at scanner and computer, dont just look... undo and reseat on both. Ensure the POWER plug is connected firmly and that it IS switched on.. try something else in that plug and see if it works.

simple things are often overlooked and users thinking technicians are just stupid to ask these questions, but 9/10 it is the simple thing that causes the problem.
