Your model TomTom will not recignize a sd card larger than 2gb. You can do a search and replace the bootloader to a newer version so it will read up to a 16gb. card, but be careful the wrong bootloader will brick your TomTom and it is not reversable.

Take special not of part 6

1. Remove the SD card
The card needs to be formatted properly first that's all,

2. formatting is better done in a card reader.

3. Right click on it and select format select FAT32 as the files system

4. Now connect the tomtom but don't let tomtom home run. exit TTH if need be.

5. You now ned to select your tom tom which will also show as a drive.

6. In windows explorer select tools then folder options. Click view and tick the box for "show hidden files and folders"
It may warn you but you can ignore it.

7. Then just copy ALL the files from the tom tom to your sd card

8. DO NOT USE CUT AND PASTE !

9. Once all the files are on switch off the tom tom and insert the sd card

It should now work

I have a no-name 4Gb with no issues at all but it is not HD/HC

I am pretty sure most tomtoms dont play nice with HC/HD

Mine is a cheap nextech one SD so you may want to take a look in that direction.

If you are near enough to a Tandy, Radio Shack, The Source, or any big box store they will have one

4gb are a little harder to find but not impossible and even my 2 gb ones hold up to 4 pretty large maps.

    eg. USA, CANADA, EUROPE, UK.

Biggest memory eater if you are like me is extra voices and applications to make my TOMTOM do things its not supposed to do.

Altimeters and map travel logging etc oh and a new media player / photo/ video player

Does not recognise the sd card

This is a common error ans is usually caused by the card not being formatted correctly

A card reader/writer on you PC is the best option

If you can plug the card in somewhere other than into the Tom Tom.
Even a card reader attached to the PC vai a USB cable will work

The computer will see the tomtom as a USB drive that can be accessed like a flash drive.

You need to format it either as "FAT or "FAT16" using the reader
In either my computer or windows explorer right click on the card (propably listed as removable drive)

Select FORMAT and use one of the FAT options above.

Plug your tomtom into the pc but don't run the tomtom home software
If the tom tom asks if you want to connect to computer say yes
Now Simply copy all of the files on your tomtom to the new card.

Once you finish doing the copy, you should be able to insert the card
If you need to add any maps voices etc then disconnect the tomtom from the pc and start the tomtom home software, then connect the tom tom to the pc.

Many tom toms will accept up o a 4gb card (but not micro versions)

Cannot get map to work

First make sure you have a backup of your NEW ONE XL. You should be able to connect your XL to your PC using USB but not use TomTom home software. Your TomTom should appear in "my computer" as a drive . OR , put the SD card in a USB reader connected to a PC , that way you can look at and copy from or to the SD card.
You should be able to copy the map you have to the SD card directly ( if there is enough room on it ) , if theres not enough room , get a new bigger card , copy all the backup files you already have on your PC + the map you want. You might / should be then able to activate that map in the XL using the codes you say you have for the maps. if you try to do this using TomTom home it might have some restiction to stop you activating the required map but hopefully you should be able to do it manually as described above rather than use TomTom home. ... GOOD LUCK .

Nokia N96 Corrupt Card

Open the card on your PC and copy all your files to a folder on your desktop. Then go to my computer, right click the memory card and format. When a little window appears just click start.

If your files are deleted then paste them from your desktop back onto your card. This should fix the problem.

Tom tom one xl wont accept SD card with map on

If you have TomTom that have the slot for SD card, then it should accepted the SD card. The instruction for how to use the SD card is simple, but it is hidden in the TomTom Home, that's why it's difficult to find it. Below are the instruction how to use the SD card.

1. Format the SD card (FAT32) and do not stick the SD in the slot yet
2. Run Backup (connect TomTom device to computer)
3. Disconnect TomTom from computer and turn off
4. Slide the SD into the slot and connect TomTom back to computer (choose "yes")
5. In the TomTom Home menu, Choosen Backup & Restore >>> and choosen Restore

TomTom Home will add all applications to the SD card. So the internal memory still have the applications and the SD card also had the same applications. Everytime you slide the card in, TomTom will automatic detect and use it as its primary storage, if it not detect, you can go to the device menu and pick the device to connect to.
Whenver you take the SD card out, then TomTom will use its internal memory.

Hope this helpful

Tomtom One 3rd edition - no SD slot and not enough memory

You could probably just manually delete the Canada/USA maps from the device, and copy over the europe (or whichever ones you need) to the device.
Just plug it in, and view the memory like a normal usb drive..delete the old, copy over the new.
Don't forget to use tomtom home to backup your gps device to your computer first (thus saving your canada maps for later..)
Afterwards, you would probably have to go into your preferences and choose the europe maps.
Good luck!
