Adding another computer to a linksys wireless G router using cable

I have a wireless G broadband router connected to a satellite box and with cable to a pc running xp and I also connect to the router via wireless from my laptop using xp. I have now brought a new computer running vista and wish to connect via cable to the router but so far all I get is the message saying a network cable is unplugged. I have checked all the connections and they seem ok. ? do i need to install the router software on this new machine or tweek any settings on the new machine. Is it necessary to have the network set up first on this new machine. All I want to do is use the internet access via the router not share files.

I checked the cable, even used it on another machine from the router and it is fine, I suspect the problem is in the settings on the new computer. It is running vista and I confess that having only looked at vista now for a few days I am not sure where some things are now placed. It is quite a difference to XP.

"Set your new machine is set to auto obtain network configuration"

Where do you do this????? -

    With thanks

Thanks saraswathi but I had thought of that and put the old computer and cable onto all the other 3 router outlets and it worked fine. I also took the new cable and connected it to the old computer to see that it was also fine. So that narrows the problem down to a software setting in the new computer.

With thanks from a so pleased she can get the net on another computer

Hi,

The message "a network cable is unplugged" indicates that the networking cable was removed or not connected properly either at the back of your PC or at the Ethernet port of the router. Perhaps you can remove and re-insert back and please verify that you hear a click when inserted right. At times, the cable itself maybe at fault, pls replace if necessary.

It is not necessary to install the router software on the new machine or tweak any settings if your new machine is set to auto obtain network configuration.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things worked out or should you need additional information.

good luck and kind regards.

How can I get the router IP of my Linksys 2.4GHz broadband router?

The Linksys G router gives you both wired and wireless connections over a broadband Internet connect to create a local area network. The Linksys router is compatible with wireless G and B devices, through the 2.4-GHz wireless band. The wireless speed is at 54 megabytes per second and you can get 100 megabytes per second with a wired connection. You have to set up the wireless configuration on the Linksys before using it on your network.

Plug the router's power cable into an electrical outlet. Attach an Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the back of the router. Connect the other end into your broadband modem. Connect your computer to the Linksys G using another Ethernet cable. This Ethernet cable can go into any of the wired router ports. Open your Internet browser. Type "192.168.1.1" in the address bar and hit "Enter." This is your router's IP address and the home of its Web configuration page. Click "Wireless." Click "Manual." Alter your SSID, also known as your network name. You can change this name to any value that you want. You can also change the wireless channel if you are in an area with many wireless connections that may interfere. Click "Save Changes." Click "Wireless Security." Choose an encryption method to encrypt your wireless transmissions. WPA or WPA2 are common security protocols you can use in wireless networks. Input a network key, also known as the network password. Click "Save Changes."

Do I need any special equipment other than the ethernet cable connection for my linksys broadband wireless-g router

That's all you need to get your wireless internet up and running. However, in order to connect computers to the wireless network, they must be wireless capable, for example, most laptops have built in wifi, however desktops will need a wireless adapter to take advantage of your wireless router.

WIFI not working with Linksys wireless-g broadband router/Comcast

Unplugging the wireless router and connecting it again should not have altered the wireless connection/configuration. You have connected the cables correctly because the Internet works when you connect a LAN cable to the router.
The Linksys wireless configuration or the wireless card configuration in the computer was changed it to lose the wireless connection. The wireless card configuration needs to be changed to match the wireless router's settings or change the Linksys with new configuration settings and configure the wireless card accordingly.
To secure your router with a login password and wireless security, please follow my instructions - click on this link :-

You should have an RJ-45 cable connected from your ADSL modem to your router's internet RJ-45 plug then download network magic or similar software to input your user name and password on the router. this way you'll have internet even if your computer is turned off.

Setting Up a Wireless Network

You can still use your existing Linksys router with your cable modem. In fact the router your have is designed to work with DSL/Cable Broadband connections.

1. Make sure to properly connec the devices in your network. Modem will be connected to the Internet port of the router. Then, laptop will be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports of the router. For initial setup of your router with modem, you need to hardwire laptop to the router.
2. Press and hold reset at the back of the router for about 15 seconds.
3. After 15 seconds turn off the router and then turn off the modem. Wait for a minute.
4. Power on modem and wait for the lights to be ready.
5. When modem lights are on, turn on router.
6. There should be 4 lights on. Power should be steady green. Internet, WLAN and Ethernet port.
7. Checked if you have Internet connectivity on your laptop while it is wired to the router.
8. If Internet is working, disconnect laptop from wired connection to the router and check available wireless network that laptop can detect.
9. The default wireless network name that the Linksys router broadcasts is "linksys". Connect to it which is an unsecured wireless network.
10. Once you are successfully connected, check Internet.

Hope this helps!

I have a computer hooked up to bell sympatico. How do I connect my new compaq to it? Thanks

If you have only a DSL or Cable modem, that doesn't have an integrated Router, then you'll need to get a router to use more than one computer. The broadband modem, will connect to the uplink port of the router, and give you usually 4 wired ports and up to 50 wireless connections.

Here is an example from linksys

How to set up network on belkin G+ wireless usb adapter

do you have a Wireless Router + Broadband modem?

This is like a base station to which your remote wireless node communicates (to get connected to your home network and internet.

something like this http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=187337 for an ADSL connection.

If you are on cable, you can either get a Router similar to the one above (but for cable) http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1138056788757&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=8875739789B01

or if your Cable modem has LAN ports you may just be able to use an "Access Point" to add Wireless capabilities. http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1126536803676&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=0367639789B22
