After installing the hard drive in the computer then boot up with the Windows 2000 installation CD. Proceed with installing Windows. delete the existing partition , create a new partition, then format the hard disk in NTFS file format, follow the instruction to complete the installation. You will also need the product installation code to complete the installation and you will need to activate the Windows license by the Internet or by phone. You will also need to install the motherboard device drivers.
Feel along the back and bottom side of your Maxtor external hard drive. Depending on the specific model of hard drive you have the unit may have screws or plastic latches inside the case. Pull of the warranty sticker and check to see if the screws are located underneath it if you don't see any screws anywhere else. Pull out the rubber stoppers at the bottom of the external hard drive case and check if the screws are located underneath. Remove the screws if your model of Maxtor external hard drive has them. Insert a thin and flat object such as a flat head screwdriver between the seams of the two sides of the case if there are no visible screws. Run the flat object around the length of the external hard drive case until it hits a plastic latch. Wiggle the object up and down until the latch disengages. Continue sliding the screwdriver along the sides until all the latches are disengaged. Pull the two sides of the Maxtor external hard drive case apart to reveal the actual hard drive enclosure inside. Remove the screws holding the hard drive into its metal cage. Pull the existing hard drive unit out the metal cage and replace it with the new hard drive. Reassemble the unit and plug it back into your computer.
However, finding a Maxtor drive with an identical PCB is not going to be easy. Once you do, you can disconnect the "spinning" part of the disk-drive away from the PCB, and then swap PCB, and see if you can then QUICKLY(!) copy all 80GB to a "new" disk-drive.
Well, I'm not sure why you discarded the old casing. If you recieved a replacment from Maxtor, they would require the drive and case, or your warranty would of been voided. Your not suppose to open those cases. However, now that you have, you can test the drive by just loading it your computer (desktop I'm hoping) as a slave drive. Make sure your pin settings on the other drive is set to master, and add it in. If it works Windows will find it and add it as new hardware. If it doesn't, then their something wrong with the drive. I'd call whomever you purchased it from.
Does it work when connected to a different computer?
If not, is it still under warranty?
If not, disassemble the case, and you'll find an "internal" MAXTOR disk-drive inside the case; try connecting that drive as a "slave" disk-drive inside your computer. If it is not recognized, then it is "dead" and you should take a hammer to it, so that any of your personal data on it will become impossible for any "identity-thief" to read, and then buy a new, larger, external drive.
They do not generally distribute spare parts for these cases. You can however purchase new complete enclosures without a drive for a small price and transfer your existing drive into the new enclosure. As the actual hard drive can generally survive several G's worth of drop force even when running, it's most likely the harddrive is ok. Once in the new enclosure test the drive out, if it works, you're done. If it doesn't the drive itself is the problem, reply here by adding a comment with your country and city and I will pass along a recommendation for a professional facility.
Hi,
drives dead. Head crash problem.
The read head, has clattered the disk(s)
the only other option is to swap the logic boards over ( if they,re identical ) ** circuit boards on the drives**
