I've just solved this very problem on a lct 20 (40GB) which was showing as 9mb. The drive came from a dead series 1 Tivo DVR, which locks the drive capacity when it shuts down. The utility that solved it for me was qunlock (Google it - there's lots of Tivo upgraders who offer it) which runs from the dos prompt (make a dos floppy - or windows startup disk - and copy the program to it). Simply type qunlock n where n is a number (0-3) that represents where the drive is (type qunlock/? for a guide). The important bit is to power off the computer afterwards! (Not ctrl-alt-del).

I also found the HDD Capacity Restore Tool from HDDguru.com which runs under windows, but although this reported the correct 40GB capacity of the drive, it did not successfully restore it for me

After clearing CMOS and it still doesn't work, try to run FDISK on the drive. Delete partitions and create a new one. There could be a hidden partition which could be using the other hard drive space. Restart PC and then format again. This should allow you to use the full hard drive capacity.

Dear sir I have a HDD 20 GB fireball and I have problem with it in the low speed of read and write in operation. I instaled windows XP and I want to improve speed my HDD. please advice me about this...

Its a very old hard disk, few things you can do,

1.. Get into your pc's bios and see if 32bit access is enabled for your disk, if not enable it, reboot.
2.. Goto control panel > device manager , double click on your IDE controller and check had disk status, if is on PIO mode or UDMA , must be at UDMA. Set it if not.

When installing a Maxtor Quantum Fireball Plus AS 20.5-GB hard drive as a second drive on a PC. You want the drive to be the slave drive, and you know what that you must change the current jumper settings....

DS=drive select meaning selected drive by the bios CS=Cable select meaning if you hook it to the second plug so set the jumper to CS and hook drive to the second cable if its is ide drive which that is what it sounds like the drive is!!

Different WIndows operating systems on two hard drives

main Dell Optiplex

Slave (cable select)
Quantum Fireball
once you have installed them physically into your comptuer like that, start it up.

Format Quantum Fireball

Now you still have windows xp, and you have a clean 2nd hard drive.

You do not need to install windows xp on the 2nd drive
Quantum Fireball .

Problem putting a 30 gig quantum lct 15 3.5"series as a slave

Did you switch the jumper config back to Master or CableSelect before trying to install them as a single drive? Also check the Maxtor website, (they owned Quantum too), for the correct jumper settings. Some of these drives (like the Quantum Fireball lct series) need TWO jumpers not just one. That was the trick that fixed mine from not being recognized by the Bios or the Windows setup disk....I got it used with only a single jumper, but it needed two to put it Cable Select mode.

Bad drive motor the disk itself is the problem, you may have to get a software that can get those files you need off that drive,in fact you will need a software that will get those files.

Having trouble using it as a solo harddrive in newer computer

Hi,

When Windows (XP?) was installed in the Quantum Fireball LCT1520 of the old Compaq Presario, the OS was married to the hardware specifically the motherboard/chipset. When it was removed and transplanted to the newer PC, the OS would be looking for the old hardware settings/configuration and since the new PC has a different motherboard and therefore cannot find the old hardware, it would loop/reboot continuously and/or BSODs.

One method of getting the old HD to work in the new PC is to do a clean/new install of the OS.

If for some reason you prefer to use the old OS in the old HD with its settings/configuration, you can try to do a repair/re-install. The procedure is similar to installing a clean/new OS except that you should opt for the 2nd repair choice (not the R or first repair option). This should retain most if not all of your old applications/settings while installing new Windows files.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
