You have got to reset the MP3 player. To do this you have to use a paperclip (or something similar) to press the button next the hold toggle it should have the word RST.

SOURCE: Reformat Sansa 280
THIS IS HOW TO RESET EVERYTHING ON A E280 SANSA MP3 PLAYER WITH VERSION 1 SOFTWARE
INSTALL RECOVERY TOOL TO YOUR PC
http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1532
NOW HOOK THE SANSA, POWER IT UP HOLDING THE
RECORD BUTTON W/ THE LOCK ON (OR HOWEVER YOU GET INTO THE RECOVERY MODE FOR YOUR UNIT)
CREATE A NEW FOLDER AND CALL IT “ sansa.fmt ” IN THE 16MB FORMAT PARTION FOLDER THAT POPS UP.
REBOOT SANSA.
GO TO SETTINGS AND PLACE IN MSC MODE.
MAKE SURE UNIT HAS THE LATEST FIRMWARE.
-GO TO SANDISK SITE-
( http://www.sandisk.com/driverdownload/download.asp?driverId=7 ) FOR XPSP2+
REBOOT AND IT SHOULD WORK LIKE NEW OR BETTER FOR YOU.
At least this is what i ended up doing to fix mine & it took me a while to figure it all out so i wanted to post it up for you all.

SOURCE: My Element mp3 player wont turn on
When your player freezes, it will only start up and not play the songs or even the buttons won't respond to your pressing them, it is more like your computer hanging and never coming back to working fine unless you restart it. The first thing you should try to do is read the instruction manual and check where the reset button in your MP3 player is. Take a small pin and push the reset button. This will make you player go off for and then you can put it on again and it will work fine. However, there is a possibility of data loss when you reset. Most of your stored stuff will be gone after reset. Another thing that you can do to retrieve your player is doing a firmware update. Do a refresh of your firmware and see if it works, in most cases, it does. Other options are the same that you and everyone else will try as soon as you MP3 player freeze. That is opening the MO3 player and taking out the battery. Set the battery back and push the power button again. It is always a good idea to do a firmware upgrade right after .you can also open it up and blow on it.
