There are numerous ports used and methods to send and recieve e-mail my setup uses the pop / smtp method where I believe the default ports are 110 / 25 however my ISP uses two other ports. Routers with port filtering enabled may allow 110 and 25 by default but are unlikely to permit other ports chosen by your or my ISP. The riskier change is to disable all port filtering. The safer option would be to open the ports required by your ISP (as well as closing the default ports that are unused).

In order to achieve this we will need to determine the ports you utilize for e-mail.

We will need to be able to access the router for configuration with a web browser.

A second option is that your computer has a firewall blocking your e-mail ports. However if this were true your e-mail would never work. The process is similar to the router in that the required ports would need to be open or the e-mail program given permission to access the internet in your computer's firewall program.

This could be a lengthy process determining your e-mail client accessing the configuration to determine the ports used. Determining if the router and/or the internal firewall are the issue and making the appropriate changes to one or both as determined necessary. If you, your neighbor or a friend is knowledgeable in these areas it may be easier to have them assist than to do this over the web.

If you wish for me to attempt to assist further I need to know what your e-mail program is? Do you have a firewall or internet security / anti virus product on your computer? What is it's name? Please include the model number of your belkin router.

Adapter wire troubleshooting

Cable modems often don't work with a router unless you do something called cloning your MAC address. The MAC address is a unique number assigned to each device's network connection. Unless the cable modem sees the MAC address of the computer originally used to set up service it often won't connect. Cloning the MAC address in the router gives it the same address as your computer, and that usually gets the connection going.

You'll find the link for cloning the MAC address in the router setup screens. Rather than go through the steps here, I suggest you download the manual for your version from Belkin or look at the copy on the CD that came with the router. I don't know which version of the router you have, so the manual I was looking at may not be exactly the same as yours.

Make sure you have the computer originally used to set up your cable Internet service connected to one of the router's wired ports. Follow the steps in the Alternate Setup section to move through the various screens until you reach the link to change the MAC address, and that's where you'll copy the address from your computer to the router. Once that's done your modem and the router should play nice together, and you'll be back online.

Hope this helps, and thanks for using Fixya!

Unable to send emails on my laptop,i have a belkin wireless g router.

If you are connect to the internet and can browse without problem, then the email issue (send or receive for that matter) is more related to your Laptop Security and/or Firewall: isolate the problem by first disabling both security and firewall on your Laptop and then if it works, re-enabling them one by one. If you do not have either security and firewall enabled on your laptop, then the issue is with the securityfirewall on your router and/or modem: again, disable the firewall on your router and/or modem: if your email problem is solved, you should re-enabled your firewall and set an exception for the ports required for your email program.

Cannot finish installation (Belkin F5D8633-4 wireless modem router N mimo)

ok, obvious questions first:

Do you have a different modem from TALKTALK? can you connect to the internet through that?

if so, you may not have to set a username and password for the belkin router: just connect the belkin router's internet port to the talktalk modem and let the talktalk modem handle the automatic connection.

do you know what protocol the talktalk ISP uses?  it's probably PPPOE; make certain that your belkin router is set to the correct protocol.  if you just hook it up to the talktalk modem though, you probably won't have to specificy a protocol at all.
