I have audio recorded on HDD and can playback DVD's as well with sound, too.
But when I record new TV programs, I get video fine but no audio.
Have tried pretty much everything settings-wise. Besides that, it has worked fine, but I am wondering the transition to digital broadcasting has something to do with it. When set to Video-1 (on my HDTV), the unit has picture but no sound, and that's what I get when I try to record. Cables all fine, and again, already recorded TV prgrms from past playback fine.

DMR-E80H Hard drive problem seems to pretty common. My drive started making the famaous kerchunk noise tonight. After disassembly I see the drive is a ATA133 Maxtor drive....are you sure that you replaced it with the correct drive? I may contact Maxtor and try to get an RMA since the drive is only 3yrs old. Good Luck

If you haven't done so, try downloading the firmware update from their support site. Burn the update file to a cd-rom.
I have had numerous times where my unit recovered and I had to format the hard drive(losing all of my shows), but since I did the update this has not happened to me again.

This happened to me. I bought a new hard drive. Just got it today! It must be the exact same one. Maxtor, 80G 133.

Type in the above HD and you will find it. Once you get it and install it, it will automaticly format itself.

One solution is to clean the laser lens. Try using one of those lens cleaning CDs.
Also, sometimes the DVD may slip on the spindle, which may cause reading errors. Spindle cleaning usually involves taking the machine apart.
Testimonial: "Not sure where I first saw the suggestion about cleaning the laser lens, but I bought a $20 cleaning disc and suddenly it worked again. Thanks!"

Hey there, am worried about your data. Try a genius technician around you or else you're at risk losing it all. Actually, those two (DVD and HD) can mean to frustrate. I guess you will opt for online backup so as to guard your vital stuff online. Personally, backing up is my daily bread at www.safecopybackup.com. Hard drive crashed but I a sure u my data was safely retrieved. woooooow! Give it a chance, u'll never look back.
