Sounds like there is a disconnect between the power in and the battery, probably a broken solder joint or a fuse. Unless you are a tech, send it in for repair.

I have the same problem. i think it is something to do with motherboard like dageezer said. the reason for my problem is that the computer doesn't recognise that the charger is 90W when quite clearly it is stated on the charger that it is, therefore the laptop doesn't recognise that the charger is producing sufficient power to charge the laptop. Mines going back to Dell because i don't have the time and cant be bothered with the agro of sorting it any other way

If you've replaced the battery with a known good and the battery will not charge, then the motherboard will need to be replaced.

Dell PC losing battery very fast

hi

turn off the computer , then remove the battery . reboot system and try rebooting the notebook with the AC adapter only.
this is to ensure the Ac adapter is working fine, and if it is, it should be charging the battery properly when its installed.

now, turn off the system again. re install the battery and try booting it up with the battery only

if the battery hasn't enough charge, then attach the AC adapter. If you have allowed the computer to charge the battery (while the computer is powered off) and it is not charging the battery, then you need to replace the battery definitely.

you can get a new battery (if you are in North America) from www.compluscominc.com

My sons Dell Vostro 1500 has a problem with the AC adaptor. It will run the laptop but wont charge the battery. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks,David

If it will run off the AC Adapter but won't charge the battery then odds are it is the battery that won't take the charge and not the AC Adapter's inability to charge anything.

Google "dell vostro1500 battery" and change to shopping. You will see many available knock off battery's starting at 20 dollars.

Although AC Adapters go out too. They last a lot longer than batteries do. Today's batteries just don't last. I would say average life span is a year to a year and a half.

Certain models talk to a chip in the adapter, sounds like this one has gone bad. At this point you can live with, buy a new one or pick up a used. This is a fairly popular model and you should be able to locate one from a dead laptop.

My battery in my dell vostro 1500 does not charge. It works with the ac adapter only. I have tried several different batteries so the battery isnt the issue and obviously the power jack isnt the issue...

Hello,

Absolutely this is the issue with motherboard. The repair charges could be confirmed by a local repair vendor only.Probably this is the issue which is not permanently curable so better to go with a new MB.

Thanks

Will the power cord for the Dell Inspiron 1501 fit the Vostro 1500?

AC adapter for both systems belong to D-Family 65 W lead-free AC adapter So you can use the Ac adadpter Note :- The Vostro 1500 discrete version requires the 90 W AC adapter. Without it, you will receive an error message indicating the wrong AC adapter type, the CPU speed will downgrade, and the battery will not charge.

Hi, Sounds like the charging circuilty is starting to fail,

Check the connection from the power lead to the DC input , is it tight ?or is there a lot of play ? if so bad connection ?

if it still under warranty, get it looked at before it stops charging completey.

Lastly , is it possible to try another charger ? make sure it the correct voltage and amps. The charger could be going down.

VOSTRO 1710 BATTERY WON'T CHARGE

If the battery will not charge, try this:

1.) First, power reset the unit by powering it off, unplugging it from AC power, removing the battery, then push and hold the power button on the unit for about 60 seconds.

2.) Next, plug the AC adapter back in (LEAVE THE BATTERY OUT), power the unit on. Does the unit power on?

If yes, Power the unit off and put the battery back in, let it charge overnight. If, after this the battery will still not charge, you will have to replace the battery. Contact the OEM to ensure you get the correct battery.

If no, remove the AC adapter carefully, look inside the DC port (where the charger plugs in to the laptop) you should see a small silver pin. Is this pin missing or bent? If the pin seems to be in good shape, then most likely you will have to replace the AC adapter. If it IS bent or missing, then you will need to contact a laptop repair center.

My Dell Vostro 1500 has a problem. AC adapter turned off when I plugged into laptop while battery plugged. It works either battery or AC adapter. Can't Charge battery. Please help!

Check the power adapter with a multi-meter, the voltage of the power plug that plugs into the power socket on the laptop should be slight higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the adapter.
If it is faulty, there are replacement power supplies available on the Internet or at your friendly computer shop.
If the adapter is OK then the power socket on the laptop is faulty or this socket has a dry solder joint connection on the motherboard.
You can test this by wriggling the power plug when it is connected to the laptop, if the charge LED flickers and if you hold this plug in a certain position the charge LED stays on without flickering, then the power socket is faulty.
This can be repaired, but requires the laptop to be completely
disassembled. I suggest you get a quote first.

Battery not charging!

If the battery is 2 years old, then buy a replacement battery, see if it charges. Portable batteries are good for roughly 300 to 500 recharge/discharge cycles before they begin to fail roughly 18 months. Dell warrants the Battery for 1 year, so there is no warranty on the battery. If a replacement battery doesn't charge, then the motherboard will need to be replaced. If under warranty, Dell will fix it, if not, motherboards are $100-150 on Ebay.
