Trouble obtaining ip address

You do not need to buy a new router, you just need to find out what the IP address is for the one you have.
then you have to look at your users manual under setup the IP address, and set it up...
An IP address has 000.000.000.000 each of the three numbers between the dots can be from 0-255.
It looks for an IP address for a certain period of time, when it cannot find the device's IP address that you have it hooked up to, it times out.
So, what ever device you have it hooked up to, you really need to know it's IP address.
to find out you need to call the manufacturer of the device and ask them what is the default IP address on the device you purchased. Or if you are hooked up to a cable modem the IP address should be on the label under the cable modem. Or you can call for a service call from the cable company for help.

If you are getting the obtain ip address message but it is timing out this means that you are not getting a good connection to your network.

Let me know how you are connecting to the internet. Like are you connecting the modem to a router then connecting the PS3 to it via a wired or wireless connection. Also let me know the make and model of you devices in your network.

Make sure you are trying to access the right WEP type. I'm using a WPA2, should give you the option

Make sure in the settings and connection list that your address settings are set to automatic. I found that manually setting my internet connection settings so I could put the UPnP as disabled helped me.

or just type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into your web browser and your login for your router will pop up from there you can turn off your wep so it doesn't need a pass.

Perhaps resetting the router will solve your problem. Have you tried that?

this is because when you hook up a internet cable to the ps3. its searchign for a connection.
You may be behind a firewall or router. you probably need your router password put in if you are indeed using a router. Otherwise if your not hooked up to the internet you have no need to go to "Network" in the consoles homepage.

IP address is your personal connection address on the internet. Assigned by the company you rent it from for you Home internet connection.

sounds to me like you have the security turned on . Just type in your security key on PS3 and it should connect. Best of luck!

When the TCP/IP is set to dynamic or "Obtain Automatically", the default gateway is supposed to blank. The default gateway address of your network is actually the router's IP address.

What is the IP address that you get when you performed step 3?
