How long do tankless water heaters last?

Tankless promotion is certainly slick and inviting...

-Tankless gas save about $100 per year vrs pre-april-2015 gas water heater for 'average family of 4.'
-New energy standards will reduce the expected savings to $70/ per year.

-Tankless electric cost about $100 more per year to operate than ordinary electric water heater for 'average family of 4'

-Do-it-yourself repairs are generally not possible with tankless.
-Tankless gas require larger vent and larger gas line, and a condensate drain.
-Whole-house Tankless electric will probably require a new electric service panel
-Tankless require yearly deliming/ descaling of heat exchanger... and heat exchanger will lose efficiency over time because of scale... even if unit is delimed each year.
-Electronic controls are vulnerable to surge
-Only the alloy heat exchanger has long-term warranty, but otherwise the warranty is same as typical tank heater
-Tankless cannot be exposed to more than 11 grains hard water or parts can fail within 2-3 years
-Tankless might not be able to keep up with higher temperature setting needed to fill very large tub (or any bathtub) if incoming water is too cold due to winter conditions. Etc.

I purchased a hot water heater about two years ago from home depot and lost the reciept. I need to track the purchase by the serial number can that be done

1) Look for brand name of your heater on following .pdf file:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Find-Age-of-water-heater.pdf

2) Home Depot sells GE heaters made by Rheem.
I am assuming that serial number starts with 1209, and that year of manufacture is 09 for 2009.

3) These water heaters have glass vial that breaks when combustion chamber experiences overheating due to dirty combustion parts, clogged air intake, exposure to flammable vapor.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-repair-Rheem-TRD.html

4) Water heater warranties are usually first-year: full parts, labor and tank. After first year: parts and tank but no labor.
Warranty may be pro-rated and the value diminishes as water heater ages.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-maintain-water-heater.html

5) Warranty may not apply is customer has not followed installation and maintenance as shown in product manual, such as checking anode rod, and yearly service by trained technician.

Register water heater

Whirlpool water heaters are made by AOSmith company, which owns American, Reliance, State, Craftmaster and makes water heaters for Kenmore and Whirlpool.
These are good heaters.

Register Whirlpool product at following link:
http://www.whirlpoolwaterheaters.com/support/warrantyreg.aspx

It is not necessary to register product for warranty to be valid.
And if you move to new home and take water heater, then warranty does not follow. So it might be disadvantageous to register product in that circumstance.

You can see brand, model number, and serial number located on label on side of tank.
The serial number is unique and is key for warranty coverage, even if you lost receipt. Serial number shows year of manufacture in first two digits.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Find-Age-of-water-heater.pdf

It is not necessary to register water heater for warranty to be valid, as long as following applies: Original owner, single-family non-commercial residential installation, and installation that conforms to instructions shown in product manual, and water heater is maintained as shown in product manual.

If you purchased extended warranty, then remember the warranty is carried by a third party that also requires same as above.
And the warranty may be pro-rated, rendering it nearly valueless in later years.

Typical water heater warranty:
First year of warranty covers tank-parts-labor.
After first year, the warranty shrinks to tank-parts.
The math shows that shorter warranty tank has greater percentage of full coverage.
Convert ordinary 6 year tank into 9-12-15 year tank by maintaining water heater. Especially cleaning air intake located on bottom of tank, inspecting anode rod to prevent rusting, and following maintenance schedule shown in product manual.

I own a house with an electric GE hot water heater. 8ESOT12AA01 Serial # 090122 5750 I do not know how old the hot water heater is and advice about when it should be replaced. No leaks to date but I...

GE is made by Rheem, but the market is always changing. Rheem-based serial number shows tank was made in 1990.
Tank will last as long as anode rod(s) protects steel tank from rusting.
If your tank has two anode rods, then tanks lasts longer.
That's how companies determine if water heater is '6-year' or '12-year.'
I don't have manual for your product to say if you have 12 year tank. Side of tank might have information blurb besides mandatory label that shows serial number.
You can update your water heater by replacing anode rod(s) assuming they can be loosened and removed after this number of years, which is a big IF with old heaters. Your plumber might have impact wrench he uses to see if anode can come out.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

If the water heater is making gurgling rumbling and/or crackling sounds then tank has sediment build-up.
You can also get a baseline of rust by flushing tank and watching if water is very rusty.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-will-not-drain.html

If you flush tank regularly, and inspect anode every 1-3 years, a tank will last many years longer than manufacturer's label.

Is my water heater still under warranty leaking water on top of heater and out from bottom and from plate

1) If water heater is leaking, I suggest you protect yourself first.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Emergency-steps-for-leaking-water-heater.html

2) You have to do some work to find out if tank is under warranty.
-Contact manufacturer: http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html
-Contact installer: If plumber installed heater, then installer backs warranty for some manufacturers. If you installed heater, then warranty is less or void
-Look at paperwork and manual that came with water heater and read about warranty coverage
-Look at markings on tank to see if tank is 6 year, 15 year etc
-Warranty is based on date of manufacture: To find date of water heater, look at serial number located on label on side of tank:
Open link below for serial number decoder by manufacturer.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/WaterHeaterSerialNumberDecoder.pdf

3) If tank is older than 6 years, and tank label shows this is a 6-year tank, then tank is no longer under warranty.
If you have a lifetime tank, then warranty is in effect, so contact manufacturer.

Open following link to see troubleshoot checklist for leaking water heater:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

Other things to consider:
-If tank rusted out after a few years and installer did not install a jumper wire between hot and cold pipes, then tank warranty will probably not cover tank.
-If tank rusted out and you have water softener, and did not inspect anode rod or maintain water heater, then you did not read manual or maintain heater, and warranty might not cover problem.
-I suggest you read water heater manual cover to cover so water heater will not start leaking.

What is the expected useful life of a Reliance 40 gallon electric water heater? Is there a maintenance step that can be taken to ensure that there is no build-up of contaminants on the elements?

The average life expectancy of any water heater relates directly to its warranty. 1 year- 1year, 6 years-6 years. If you use the water heater past its warranty, you are really making money on the purchase.

Installing a new anode rod is about the only maintenance step you can take. However, this does not guaranty that you will not accumulate build up.

Draining the water heater once a year helps a little bit with buildup in the bottom of the tank but not the elements.

The ultimate solution is to install a water treatment system, not just a water softener. They are somewhat expensive, but well worth the cost in the long run-10 to 15 years.

When I hooked the water line to the camper for the first time this year, water came pouring out from under the water heater. Any ideas what happened?

With any water heater that's a sign that the water heater is shot because the glass shelled interior tank broke. It usually happens around the year on the water heater, say its a 7 year water heater, it would break after the 7 year point. There are other factors such as water pipes leaking, but they are on top or the side and would not be leaking from underneath.
