My friends Ps3 wont play certain dvd's its selective in what dvds it wants to play. It will play games and Blu rays... but some regular dvds it wont play.
PlayStation 3 is able to play Blu-ray discs and games with ease but fails to play DVD discs. In most cases, this falls to the category of configuration issue. Since you have brought a PS3 from a digital store, you will not keep your eyes on the configuration of the console itself. Once you insert a piece of Blu-ray/DVD disc into the player, it can automatically set up the configurations for you at once. But the default settings may have worked against the DVD playbacks. In order to solve the problem on DVD not playing on PS3, you need to reset the configurations on PlayStation 3.
Step 1. Go the "Setting Menu" on PS3 and select "Display Settings".
Step 2. Click "Video Output Settings" under the submenu "Display Settings".
Step 3. Then select "HDMI" to go ahead. You can see many resolutions options and make sure the resolution required for DVD has been ticked. If you are not sure about the DVD resolution, you can test the resolution display first.
Step 4. Once it is ticked and save the settings and restart your PS3. And then it can play DVD disc easily.
You also could try Leawo Blu-ray Player which can play any DVD discs regardless of DVD protection and region code.
It could be due to the region code. If the DVD you bought comes from a different area than where you bought your PS3, then the region code would probably stop you from playing the DVD. Try ripping the DVD and converting it to ordinary video files to play on PS3. Here's how to rip a Blu-ray disc to play on PS3, but it also works for DVDs: Direct and Indirect Ways to Play Blu Ray on PS3 Respectively
