1. turn off the electrical power first.
2. attach a garden hose to the hose bib attachement on the bottom of the water tank and run the hose outside to allow the water to drain out by gravity.
3. Turn the valve that is on the inlet of the water heater. Now that the power is off, you can drain the tank.
4. open the drain valve where the hose has been attached.
5. To release the pressure, you can open a hot water faucet in your kitchen. This will allow the water to drain out easier.

Do you have to shut off pilot when draining a rheem hot water heater

But if tank is empty for days, you don't want the water heater firing, since it will eventually affect the metal heat-transfer surface between water and flame.

Drain valve plastic slow leak 81V-80D

If the drip is coming out of drain valve: Put a hose cap over end of drain valve.
If water is seeping out of cracked drain vale, then replace it.
If the leak is seeping around previously sealed threads, then tank may be rusted beyond repair.

Moved into brand new house March '06. The Rheem water heater has slow seapage/leakeage around bottom. What kind of warranty does Rheem offer? Under 5 yrs of use.

Please specify the exact source of the leak? If it is the tank drain then that can be resolved by replacing the boiler **** valve. If it is the lower element then it may be tightened. If it is the tank itself then you will be faced with replacing it. Sorry, but I am not familiar with the warranty on the Rheem WH. Warranties vary, usual 5, 6 or 10 year.

Im looking for the drain on a vanguard 3wa79 by rheem. i want to change the element but cant figure out how to drain the tank. i have looked all around the bottom of the tank and around the whole unit and...

The drain is a plastic valve, looks like a knob with a hose fitting coming out the middle of it. It should be about 1' above the bottom of the tank enclosure.
Be sure to turn the gas off before you drain the water and fill the tank before you relight it.

Pop off valve dripping Rheem 50 gal electric valve at bottom

If you are reffering to the drain valve at the bottom of the hot water tank. It may be leaking due to the O ring being cracked or worn out. You can either drain the tank and replace the valve or you can buy a hosebib brass cap and thread it on the existing valve. There is no cause for alarm when doing this as this valve is just to drain the tank when replacing your hot water heater
