I once had an adaptor that would allow this kind of transition but it is odd that a Sony would have ASA threads instead of metric.

If you have a major camera shop (not Mall-wart) nearby they should have these.
If not, check with Ritz or Beach Camera.

As a last resort, the major chain 'home-improvement' stores may have 'wing screws' that could work.

Does the company that makes this tripod sell the small square part that screws into the camera?

Tripod quick mount plates (the part that is secured to the camera) are specific to tripod manufacturer. A tripod without a mating mounting plate is pretty much worthless as there is no way to mount the camera to it.

You will need to contact the manufacturer (or a reputable camera store) and provide the model of your tripod and the size of the threaded mount in you camera - most are either 1/4" or 3/8".

How adjust the vertical viewing

are you just mounting a camera to the tripod itself? - you need to purchase a head as well - the head screws onto the top of the tripod, and then the camera fixes to the head, usually with a qr plate.

You need a quick release plate in order to attach you camera to your tripod, it fits into the opening of the adapter on the tripod and you screw the plate into your camera, take a look at www.tripodquickrelease.com they carry Velbon quick releases and adapters.

The screws on my tripod will not tightened

Take out the whole Camera Plate. there is a plastic cap on the top of the tripoid, right by the end of your tripod extender, that comes out with a little pulling it. Now, have a look at the end of the knob housing from which your screw accidentaly came out. You will see a perfect spot in wich you need to re- insert the nut that came out. Once you do it, all you need to do is to re- insert the knob back into place, and it will "bite" the nut again at the end of the housing. Re- install the whole plate back on top of your tripod. Finally, put the plastic cap back at the top. You might need to gently tap it in. Done deal . Problem resolved ! Enjoy your tripod !

It is usually obvious where the camera goes, so I am pretty sure that what you have is a tripod with a quick release plate that doesn't have the quick release plate fitted. This is very common when you buy a tripod second-hand. The quick release plates get attached to a camera and people forget to reunite them with the tripod before disposing of it.

If you bought the tripod new, then look in the packaging for a plate with a screw to attach to the normal camera tripod screw in socket. There ought to be more than one. The screw is standard throughout the world, except maybe Germany that used to use a different size. Any camera you have will have this socket on the bottom, a threaded hole about a quarter inch (5 or 6mm) in diameter. The plate will be a design peculiar to this make of tripod, and if you lose it or don't have it you will be unlikely to get another.

I cannot figure out how to get the plate off the head. I end up either putting camera on, then twisting the whole thing onto the tripod, or putting the head on the tripod and twisting the camera around to...

Sounds as if you haven't unlocked the quick disconnect plate from the 222 head.

Release the quick disconnect plate from the 222 pistol grip with the thumb release it will click open and pop the release plate up a bit to remove it. The affix this plate to the camera tripod socket 1/4 x20 female thread on the camera bottom. The underside of the quick release plate has a "D" ring to screw it to the camera, fold over the "D" ring and when you pit it back on the 222 set the edge under the lip and set it down the brass pin then will snap the thumb release over and lock into place.

How to put a camera on it

If it's a quick release tripod you need to remove the quick release plate (Usually a release lever to the side of the top of the tripod) and then fasten the plate securely to the camera and then the plate to the tripod. Older non-quick-release tripods have a knurled screw located below the flat area where the camera is attached. If the screw is missing, get a relacement from your local hardware store - 1/4" -20. (Find a way to keep the new one from getting lost.)

it is a quick release plate. there is usually a button or lever to release the plate. you then screw the plate into the bottom of your camera or camcorder and mount the plate back onto the tripod. you can leave the plate on your camera when you store it to allow for faster setup.

Unable to unscrew camera from mounting plate tripod

The mounting plate may have a small pin with a spring to fit certain kinds of cameras.
Don't try to twist the plate off the camera, that may damage the bottom of the camera.
Instead, the plate should have a slotted screw in the bottom that screws into the camera. Unscrew the bolt with a good screwdriver.
