Start simple and try another adapter, I usually advise people when this occurs to take it to a local pc shop where they can do some very quick power tests right on the desk there. Trying another adapter is step one, then a test of the DC jack is step 2 and then on to the rest of the power circuit of the motherboard is more extensive and needs a system teardown.

Here below are possible causes and troubleshooting steps of laptop that can't power on, hope it may help:
Possible causes:

1. AC adapter failure.
2. Power jack failure.
3. Motherboard failure.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solutions:
1. Test the AC adapter with a digital multimeter. It's possible that you have a failed AC adapter. If you don't have a multimeter, test your laptop with another known good AC adapter.

2.It's possible that power jack (socket where you plug the AC adapter) is broken. Remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack. In some cases you can fix the jack by resoldering it on the motherboard. In other cases you have to replace the jack with a new one. Using a multimeter, test if the power goes to the motherboard through the jack.

3. If replacing the AC power adapter and jack on the motherboard doesn't help, most likely you have a bad motherboard. Replace the motherboard.

Connecting charger and letting charge for sometime...charging light doesnt turn on and laptop doesnt turn on...any advise?

For this kind of issue, please follow up the following steps to check:

1.confirm the battery and ac adapter connect the laptop normally.Maybe the bad connect lead to this problem. If there are no lights when you turn on laptop, one of possible reason is that your adapter is malfunction.

2.the second possible cause is laptop dc jack failure. If the dc jack is broken or loose, you are required to replace it or repair it.

3.Another possible reason is that there is something wrong with laptop motherboard. For this situation, it includs two kinds of possibility,a failure in an electronic circuit and BGA malfunction.

For more detailed reasons and solutions, please have a look at the following article:http://www.ifitjams.com/lappower.htm

If you verify your laptop adapter is dead and you plan to order a new one, I recommend one for you on the basis of your laptop model:

Laptop failure

hi

never leave a system running unattended for long period of time without a battery back up (UPS), as low and high current spikes will cause damage to the circuitry of the computers mainboard.

Have you tried using the AC adapter to power up the computer ? if that works and the battery is dead, simply replace the battery. if the system is not powering up at all, then the issue is bad AC adapter or the mainboard is damaged from overload of current.

My hp pavillion was no power without ac adapter

if the pc is not getting power without the ac adapter then most likely the battery is dead if it does not take a charge via the ac adapter then then the battery is no good or the ac adapter is busted

There is power in the laptop.

if you say that either the battery nor the adapter was tested and seemed working fine but not actually giving power to the laptop itself then the problem is the motherboard from your laptop i m afraid

It could be one of three things. It could be a bad battery, a bad ac adapter, or the recharging circuitry could be bad. I would try pulling the battery out, and see if the laptop will startup and run strictly off of the ac adapter. If that does not work, you have a bad ac adapter. If that works, and the battery has any charge left, try running it strictly on the battery. If it doesnt work, you have a bad battery. If it does work, the circuitry is bad and you will probably need new motherboard. One other thing you can check is where the ac adapter and battery plug into the laptop, and make sure there is no corrosion that could be causing a short.

Power trouble

Try another known good AC adapter. You could try a universal AC adapter (targus/Igo or kensington). Call around to see what computer stores in your area will let you try one before you buy it.

If that doesnt solve it then you will have to take it somewhere to be disassembled and repaired.
