After downloading the 3.0 firmware update my games began freezing. First COD4, then MLB 09, COD: WAW, LBP, etc. A day or two later I begin receiving the 80010514 disc read error. Now I can not play any disc based games or blue ray movies. It seems to play DVD's fine. I also can play all downloaded content like demos and movies.

man lsn carefully, at the current time i am writing this to u i am formating my PS3 becauz of COD4 MW2 :S man i swear that there are alot of problems in this game on PS3, i dont have the same problem as yours but man check if ur PS3 has the latest update also u have to know that there was an update for COD4 MW2 u should have it too, but im so sure that there is something wrong with this game :S:S:S:S:S:S
well, it must be a problem with your game files, because most loading processes are done by the Installed game files . if other blu-ray games are running well, i guess you don't need to worry about the lens .
please try:
Reinstalling all your game data files
Reupdating your system firmware via USB Device (download the update from Playstation Website)
Restoring your system (don't forget to backup all your important files !!)
else, contact Sony support centre for possible hardware issues checking (i belive there isn't anything wrong with your ram or gpu units....)
First try to update the PlayStation software itself and then update the COD. Due to specs of PS3 soft none of updates will allow background download. and make sure that your internet connection is uninterrupted, I sugest u to use wired connection rather than wireless, and while update is in progress try to keep all other internet connection requiring equipment offline for smoother process.
the best bet for you is to ask Sony for service,it looks like the console is having major hardware issues..the only other option is to do a reset but you will lose all data..(u can back up though)
unfortunately there is no quick fix i had to phone ps3 and get a new one they were really good about it explained what happen and it is a problem with them i phoned up on the monday and they sent out a new ps3 next day u have to do a swap they give u new one and take the old in one go the number is on the ps3 website customer service. hope this help and hope u get it sorted.
