We have a GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800. Stainless Steel. Hd it for abour 3 years now. Suddenly while heating a cup of water it surged and make a weird noise. It has only been running a few seconds. We shut it down and then tryed to use it again. Sound good, all appears to be worlking fine but now will not heat. I have checked with GE & they said no recalls. Something is weird. Has some of the same symptoms that I have seen people describe on other GE Microwaves. HELP....
I had the same problem. I replaced the wave guide/cover and everything was fine. It is a piece of cardboard inside the microwave that covers the magnetron. Mine was saturated with grease, and was damaged by the fire. If yours is still intact and not that greasy, You can carefully remove it. Clean both it and the area inside the cavity with an alcohol based cleaner. If there is so much as a pin hole in the cover it will need to be replaced. When grease somehow gets behind the cover an arc is formed which causes the problem.
After rereading your question, I am not sure my solution applies to your problem. In my situation a bright flashing lightshow appeared along with this weird humming sound every time I tried to turn it on. It never stopped - I don't know if the oven was heating or not. Since I turned it off immediately.
