Hitacha 50V720's Lamp Bulb

Hey folks,

I am in the process of replacing the second bulb on the above TV. The first one was under warranty, but the cost of the second bulb was added to my Master Card Account. The TV was just purchased around December 2005. What is the average life of these bulbs? Shouldn't Hitachi start including about 3 or 4 of them free to new TV buyers?

I also wonder why the wait time is so much longer for Under-Warranty Service than it is for Not-Under-Warranty Service? I believe it's that money thing.

Hitachi needs to get with the program and throw-in some bulbs for free if they are only good for less than 18 months.

  • Rick S Dec 10, 2007

....or at least tell the customer than "continued use of this TV will cause the bulb to burn out in approximately 15 to 18 months. Hitachi regrets that you will have continued maintenance on this unit".

  • ike62 Dec 14, 2007

I'm like Rick, they should at least throw in a couple of extra bulbs when buy this tv. They did not tell me that the bulb would go out in 15 to 18 months, knowing that, I don't know if I would have bouhgt the tv or not. Ike

I bought my 50V720 Jan 2006 from CC. First Bulb went out 3/2007.

With a CC warranty, and 3 weeks without our expensive TV, we got it replaced.

Bulb # 3 blew 9/20/2007, paying $212 at my expense.

Here I am on 2/24/2008 needing a new bulb again.

Buy a new bulb every 5-6 months, complain to CC and Hitachi for replacement?

  • mds0360 Feb 27, 2008

I purchased mine in April of 2006 bulb burnt out the night before Super Bowl Took approx 6 weeks for new bulb to arrive. Now 2nd bulb burnt out within 11 Months. Was told by Customer No Service that bulb that they were replacing first time would be under warranty for 12 months but when I called they said it was for 90 days they didn't believe me I guess so next time I am asked how I like my TV I won't be suggesting a Hitachi.

  • coco12 Mar 03, 2008

I have the same TV. I cannot find the receipt to know the exact date it was purchased, but I know that it has been about two years. The bulb just blew in mine. OUCH! I cannot believe this! For the price paid, it shouldn't have broke down for at least 10 years. If I would have known this I would have went with a Walmart throw away. They last at least 6 years.

  • lightshiner Jan 29, 2009

I told my husband that the problem was that he leaves the TV on all night sometime.. I didn't realize that it is a problem with the TV. I too agree that this should have been something that was explained or disclosed when you buy the TV. The first one was replaced under warranty and now that the warranty is expired having to spend an average of $100 for the lamp every 18 months or so is an option that I would not have chosen.

i am on my second bulb. the shop told me that they last about 2000 hrs. they failed to mention this when i was buying.

I have the same T.V. Purchased Dec. 05. Replaced the bulb in Aug.07. The latest issue in a blue haze over taking the entire screen. I used to sell these T.V.'s so I knew the bulb had a certain lifespan ( approx. 3 years with average use. 3-5 hours per day) If you we're not made aware of this then you had a poor sale associate. The blue haze has me very worried that I bought a POS. I now feel bad for recommending Hitachi to some of my friends. I also recommended Sony to them as well, thank god most of them went with Sony. I will never buy a Hitachi product again!

I would suggest a class action lawsuit, because I was told by curcuit city (when I bought my junk Hitachi 50v720) that this tv was a good buy and I would not have to worry about any real major problems. Well, I am having the same identical problem as everybody else. I say let's sue this company and the ship it road in on...

Projection TV makers charge an arm and a leg for their replacement lamps. They make it easy to do but as a result the custom lamp assy is expensive. The trick is to just buy the bulb for your model TV from any number of us aftermarket sources at a fraction of the lamp price and install it in the old lamp yourself. really easy. Some models are real bulb hogs though. Look them up on the net (include the word complaint or repair) before you buy, or you might be sorry. Many class action lawsuits out there - even against some of the name brand makers.

We have a dlp, we replaced the lamp in August and it's telling us to replace the lamp again and it won't come on at all now.

There could be a problem eminating from the set that is causing the lamp to burn out quickly, however I am guessing the new lamp should be under warranty so I would probably go down that route.
The bulbs are very sensitive so if the tv has taken a knock this may also have cuased the problem.
If the bulb isn't under warranty a replacement set would probably be better given the high cost of the bulbs.

TV went off, and three lights come on (green "power", red "temp", and red "lamp")for just a second, in succession from left to right.

My television had two red lights flashing, one for Temp and the other for the lamp. I removed mythe lamp assembly and the bulb filament was burnt out. I order a new lamp and housing unit UX21517 and replaced it and now I have the red light flashing which is calling out the lamp again.

My hitachi 50v720 bulb blew and the replacement doesn't fit

I believe the lamp you need is the UX21516. not the 21517
I have a 50VF820 and this is the lamp for it.
By the way my unit just hit the 3 years and the lamp just blew as well.

Hitachi 50v720

You need to remove the front panel of the TV. If you look at the picture above, this panel is the light gray piece on the bottom of the tv. It is attached with plactic connectors. Just poo it off and then you will see a metal panel with some screws. remove the panel and then you will see the light buld casing. Pull it out and replace it with the new light bulb casing. If you did not purchase a new light bulb casing and bought just the bulb, you will need to take the casing apart and replace the bulb. Make sure to mark the wires so you will know where they should be connect to the new bulb.
