My PS2 will play DVD, But I get disk read error when I try to play a game. I have already took it apart and cleaned the lens, and also adjusted the lens wheel.

Try a good clean disk

When your console does not read any disk, that is usually because of a problem with the optical laser lens that is dirty, faulty or opaque, and will start operating on certain disks better than others.

In that case you will hear disk spinning, whirring and clicking, but the TOC (table of content track at start of CD/DVD will not be read, therefore the error.

Whe this problem is starting you may be able to read only few CD, DVD. After more prolonged usage , often the PS start losing the rest of functions, and ends up not reading anything at all.

If instead there is no noise, and disk does not spin at all , then there is a faulty motor, or the motor micro-switch is bad. This situation is far less common than the lens problem.

Try first using a CD/DVD cleaner disk to clean the lens. If that does not work you will need to disassemble the PS, and clean lens directly with q tips and isopropyl alcohol, or to replace the CD/DVD lens, or the whole drive unit.

before doing tis, contact Sony to check if the unit can be replaced or repaired by Sony, you find the number on the Console documentation.

I had the same problem with mine. it would play the ps2 games just fine but when i put a DVD in, it would click and keep saying reading disc.. i took it apart and gently cleaned the lense with a qtip and now it works fine

try this:
clean the laser lens with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol (not dripping).
gently touch the q-tip to the laser lens and gently twirl the q-tip.
use the other side of the q-tip to dry the lens.

Its almost always the laser. I would bet on the laser.

You could try flashing the firmware..just a shot in the dark, but what the heck, you got nothing to loose. Instructions can be found at the PS2 website.

Is this a new problem or has your PS2 always had this issue? You cannot adjust the laser at all and are likely to damage it if you try, you can however clean the laser lens with a CD/DVD cleaning disk and you'd be surprised how often this resolves disk read issues. Some of these units did have a production fault that prevented them from reading DVD's, if your PS2 has had this fault since new and/or is under 12 months old you could probably have had it repaired/replaced by Sony but by opening it you will have invalidated you're warranty.

You are going to have to get the lens adjusted or get a new one. I would hope just to get it adjusted, because it will be cheaper. Send it to a repair shop and start having fun again. connie
