At idle the alt shows 12.5 ?
How about at 2000 RPM....does the voltage rise with increased engine speed?
If no increase in voltage with higher RPM........the alternator may be defective.
Remember....if battery is low and you add the load of all accessories the voltage may be low at idle speed until the battery is charged up.....this would be normal under this condition. Once the battery is charged the alt can handle the load of the accessories at idle and should be able to keep voltage up.
Also......a defective battery could be taking all the alt has got to give.....resulting in a low voltage reading.
We would like to see approx 14.5 volts when vehicle is running.

The alternator not charging on a 1998 infiti i30 why?

the voltage regulator is most likely the problem
take it to an accredited auto electrician for a full charging system check to properly diagnose the fault as just replacing and guessing is costing you money

Will an alternator for a 2001 grand prix fit the 1998 grand prix?

No. As there are three different engines that can be in that model in both years, the numbers for the alternators do not match for any of the engines. The mounting locations do not align, and the 2001 uses a 110A alternator while the 1998 uses a 105A alternator,

My 1998 Ford Explorer Sport S-belt makes a continuous squeaking noise that gets worse with acceleration. The alternator and the belt are both working, the belt just squeaks horribly. I've put silicon on...

it is likely one of the pullies failing. the most likely one is the tensioner pulley. only way to fix that is to replace it. also examine the front of your water pump. if there is any fluid "weeping" from the casting hole(s) at the front that would likely be your culprit

Serpentine belt

depending on the shop a serpintine belt replacement on your vehicle will run about $50 - $100 in labor alone. the belt uses the power of the engine to run accessory systems like your air conditioning, powersteering. and vital systems like running the alternator to charge your battery and turn the water pump to circulate coolant/antifreeze in the cooling system. typically on a corrolla a belt will last roughly 50,000 miles before it starts showing signs or wear which are cracking and squealing, if you dont replace it the cracks will get worse over time until the belt eventually breaks. which to be honest takes a very long time.

Belts making noise

Simply check is to replace the serpentine belt tensioner. Looks like this:

Another reason you might have alternator going to die. Try to rotate the alternator rotor without belt on it. If you need to use force no free rotation, replace the alternator.
