I have a LG 42 inch plasma tv model 42pc3d....the other nite my wife was watching tv then she heard a loud pop and then noticed that the tv has sound but the picture is washed out mainly with black and whitw picture. It is had to describe what the picutre looks like, but I will try 1/3 of the left side of the picture is "blacked" out unable to see picture....the rest of the picture lookd like a blurred, more dark than light picture....it kinda looks like what a picture would look like if you were trying to view it through smoke....yea that about the best description I can give the unit was purchased Sept. 2006 approx. 1 yr. out of its 2 yr. warranty. Any assitance that can be given is appreciated. I am not afraid to tackle the repair myself. I am more a high voltage type tech. leaning more towards power than electronics...I have a 2 yr degree from a tech school in inductrial electricity and a E.E.T. degree from the University of Alabama.

Hello Tiangston9.
These plasma TVs have a common failure with the Ysus boards, more specific an IC that is underneath the big heatsink. The capacitors in the power supply became defective as well.

Our LG 50" plasma tv screen went black after a popping noise but still had sound, after great diliberations decided to take the back off and have a peek!
We unplugged the tv and tested the fuses (there were three we could see) one had blown, the one on the left as you look at the back of the tv it also has one above it. We wrote the code/seriel number down and took the fuse to the electrical wholesalers Maplin and bought a pack of 10 fuses for £1.29 replaced the fuse in the tv and everything now fine!!!!!!
Hope this might be of use to anyone whose lost the picture after a loud popping/snacking noise but still has sound.

Hi , I recently had the same problem which I was determined to fix . So I did a few weeks of research to find that it was the Y SUS board which burns out. I'm sure you realized that the TV gets hot. Personally I think this is why. circuit boards don't like heat and I've learned that the cooling fans are a joke. I replaced the board and got my picture back. I proved the fan theory because after the screen started to act up. I placed a cooling fan near the vent holes on top and the problem cleared right up,It also helps if you lower the brightness which helps out on the heat situation.I will soon be adding a fan with a temp. sensor. This shoud help if your screen has lines when you initially turn the cool TV on.then I have Some other costless solutions. Hope this helped these are great TV's and like our cars we maintain them not throw them away..................................Mr Wiseman

Its very likely that you need to have LG perform a sodtware upgrade on your unit. Contact LG and see if your tv is one of the applicable units with software upgrade issues, please let me know if it works. Good Luck.

One of the SUS panels will be defect. On these panels you will find several fuses, the panel with the broken fuse must be replaced.
Sus panels are the panels with the big cooling blocks.

Most likely what happened is one of the capacitors went bad. When a capacitors goes bad it produces a popping sound. This could be an easy and cheap fix if you find the bad capacitor or capacitors. The bad capacitor will have a bulging top most likely on the power board but could be anywhere.

Unfortunately, that board is the inverter board. And for this model the inverter board is only supplied with the the PDP panel. The panel is quite expensive, here's a link if needed:
