No particular number as the ideal thermostat setting will vary depending on the age/efficiency of the appliance and the ambient temperature.

A midpoint setting would usually plunge the cabinet temperature well below freezing and guidance from the thermometer will allow you to fine tune to the correct temperature of minus 27 C over a period of a few days.

As your freezer unexpectedly defrosted, it has probably developed a fault...

While the freezer is cold, cut out defrost thermostat and measure resistance, if open, replace, if it's ok check defrost heater.
Temporarily short the wires that went to the defrost thermostat and now force defrost.
If no defrost, you have a bad adaptive defrost board.

SOURCE: Freezer not defrosting

Hello pumpguy2
Welcome

You said, you have a Kenmore bottom Freezer Model 596.73503201. It works fine but the freezer has stopped defrosting. Any suggestions?

It is supposed to be auto or self defrosting.
What do you mean you are getting ice forming in the freezer?
Waiting for your response and more detailed explanation.

SOURCE: Kenmore Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

hi In some cases, a faulty thermostat may not be the cause of a warm refrigerator or freezer. A warm box may also be caused by a defective fan, a blocked fan, or broken or bent fan blades. If the blades are jammed, try to free them. If they're bent, straighten them with pliers. If this doesn't solve the problem, call a professional service person.

On some refrigerators, the door switch operates the evaporator fan. If the fan seems to be malfunctioning, the door switch could be faulty. Test the switch as detailed in the last page, and replace it if necessary.

I have a kenmore frost free freezer. the model number is 253.26432100. please tell me how to initiate a defrost check on this type of freezer. it has a digital thermostat and no manual timer that you can...

Hi.

You cannot manually initiate a defrost check on this unit because this is an automatic self defrost cycling fridge/freezer.

There is no way to start a manual defrost check. Manual defrost can be done disconnecting the power plug from main overnight. In that case check the drain pan located at the bottom of the unit before defrost is done.

If there is ice buildup on condenser coil, then defrost system is malfunctioning.

In that case the parts in the defrost system must be tested.

Here temporary link to user manual.

If that does not work, use this link.

Here link to part list and diagram.

Regards.

My kenmore 106.5706 has good freezer operation but warm refrig side. Fridge bottom vent had ice buildup and there was also no air from the top vent. I unplugged overnight to let ice melt then reconnected....

Most times that is the first sign of a defrost problem. Yours has a electronic defrost control part number 4388932 inside the fresh food section that may be bad. Look in back of freezer is frost building up on rear wall. If yes we need to check the defrost heater, defrost thermostat and the defrost control board. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Kenmore model 596.72253201. Bottom freezer works, fridge does not

The most likely reason is part number 12566102 Adaptive Defrost control board. The next likely are the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat,Sea Breeze I will send you photos. below

Top refrigerator section will not cool

Check the evaporator fan , freezer must have a fan to avoid ice formation, if evaporator does not work, thermic sensor jams up and freezer stop working. The fan is located behind the panel in the freezer.

Check the back of your freezer, If there is frost or ice, then the unit is not defrosting.
This is often caused by problems with evaporator system.
Sometimes you also need to check the defrost timer, located at the top of the FFC on the Top freezer.
Check also the defrost thermostat, which is on the evaporator inside the freezer.
If it isnt defrosting, change both.

Kenmore 19 frezer on bottom

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
