When I use the scan mode to copy a letter, photo, or anything else, it comes out all black. This also happens if I try using the copy mode.
Is this caused by a lamp inside that may have burned out? If so, is it replaceable, where can I obtain a new bulb, and how can I locate/replace the defective light?
The lamp in your scanner is defunct and the replacement of these varies greatly and may not be a DIY job depending on the amount of work to access the guts of the scanner.
You need to contact Dell to obtain the part number for the lamp and perhaps order it through them; check your owner's guide for the 800 number.

You need to poiwer cycle after cleaning as the scanner only calibrates during power up. If all is clean, even the white bar over the small glass assembly, and you power cycle the machine and it's still there, you will need a new scan assembly.
I can get it to do sortof bubble-letters if I convert to a jpg or png or gif first, but the behavior here with my X4650 is very similar in that it won't do black at all from Word or web-browsers.
The PHOTO mode is for printing grayscale photographs. Printed letters using PHOTO mode may appear faint because PHOTO mode is optimized for halftones. See if there is a TEXT or LETTER print mode, and try printing on that setting. If printed letters are still faint, you may have to go into ADVANCED PRINTER PREFERENCES, and see if the TONER SAVE mode is on. If it is, turn TONER SAVE off. Also, try changing the DPI image density, or try other adjustments in the ADVANCED PRINTER PREFERENCES MODE.
you need to go to your printer settings and make sure it is set as the default printer for everything. Make sure it is also set as your default scanner. you may also try lightening the image with the lighter/darker setting on the machine. if this continues, you may want to see if a section of the light is burnt out. this wiill cause darkness on scan & copies but not printing from the c drive. Make sure the machine is lighting up completely when is scans or copies. If part of the lighting is burnt out it will be a fix or replace situation.
Does this help? You obviously have to insert the media type into the media slot on the far right.(omoademola)

After you scan it, do you immediately print it in an image format or do you use word? If you use word i might have a tip that might help.
Before printing, click File>print>click on "Properties" and check that the grayscale printing box isn't marked, if it is unmark it and it'll print in colour.
Also anything is that, when you're scanning. After previewing your scanned piece, double check the mode, either magazine (which is in colour), Black and white or outline (i think)
