Windows XP Pro USB HID problem.

I just rebuilt windows xp pro on 1 of my 2 hard drives and for some reason my wireless keyboard mouse combo only fully works on 1 particular usb port. If I plug it into any other port, the keyboard works but the mouse doesn't. Sometimes the mouse works for a second but thats it. My other wireless mouse is also acting odd. Both devices use the generic windows drivers.

My other hard drive still has xp installed and if I boot into that os, everything works fine as it has for years. I also tried restoring an image taken immediately after installing all windows updates and drivers but before installing any other software, the problem exists there too reducing the likelihood that 3rd party software caused the problem.

I would hate to have to rebuild xp again as I just spent lots of hours installing software and customizing windows.

First suggestion was tried and made no difference
Second suggestion is not relevant as there are no manufacturer drivers
Third suggestion doesn't help since the 1 port that does work does not have good reception, besides my standalone mouse is still having similar problems.

    Thanks, anyway.

The keyboard is a Adesso WKB-3000UB (its actually has a trackball that works as a mouse) and the stand alone mouse is a vuescape.

Also, device manager is not showing anything unusual.

First suggestion is to shut down, change ports and then, upon reboot, wait a few minutes to let XP resolve the 'new' USB devices.
Second suggestion is to download and install the manufacturers drivers and then try switching ports.
Final suggestion is to use the port that works. i.e. I went to the doctor and said "It hurts when I do this". He replied "Well, then don't do that.".
Good luck
p.s. you may want to list the model of the keyboard if you would like a more specific response.

USB devices not recognised or not working properly?

Try these steps to reinitialize your usb ports on your pc

1. Unplug ALL USB devices connected to the computer. If you are using a USB mouse and keyboard, temporarily use the older type PS/2 devices if you have them, if you don't then just leave them connected.

2. Hold down the windows key and press r

3. Type devmgmt.msc into the run menu and press ok

4. Click on the + sign next to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers

5. You might need another mouse to do this if you have a usb mouse.. I recommend you get a ps2 connector mouse which goes into the green round connector in the back of your pc.

6. Right click and uninstall first the usb root hubs. all of them then uninstall the rest of the devices you see under Universal serial bus controllers

7. Ones you have uninstalled everything you should see the Universal serial bus controllers there at all.

8. Now go ahead and restart your pc.

9. Ones you have restarted the pc your usb ports will reinstall in a moment stand by while it installs all of them. If you get warning messages click ok or continue installation.

10. Now go ahead and plug the usb devices back in. Install software if required, all usb devices if not faulty or broken should work now. Also note the error code if you get one?

This solution doesn't fix all usb problems so if you have a yellow ! mark there and device status reports a error code. Then it might not be a problem with your usb ports.

Wireless Multimedia keyboard volume keys won't work.

Go to start and run then type services.msc or if using windows 7 just go to start and type services.msc in the search box. Once open find the service "Human Interface Device Access". Change it from manual to automatic and make sure that it is started.

Strange situation that I am getting annoyed with. Here's what the deal is: I have a Wireless MS Intellimouse Explorer which actually works fine but, the intellipoint software (nor device manager) does...

Sounds like you need to update your mouse's driver, you will find the intellimouse 6.3 driver for Windows XP at the link below "IntelliPoint 6.3 32-bit for Windows XP".

Keyboard

I've used the 62150 black combo on XP Pro, not the 62150N Deluxe silver combo, for years without a problem after setting them up. Had 2 PS2 ports so had to use an adapter for the keyboard connector. To sync, press the ID button on the receiver. LED will blink fast for a few seconds, then slower Press the ID button on the mouse and keyboard while receiver is still blinking (need a pen or something for the mouse button). If the receiver LED blinks whenever you move the mouse or hit the keyboard, it is receiving the signal. If the OS does not recognize input, it could be the connectors (I had separate PS2 for mouse and keyboard each).
