I was just having this problem after I installed a new operating system on my computer. I finally downloaded the full setup (updated as of march 2009 on Toshiba's website)
I downloaded and ran the full setup instead of the standard one I had on my computer previously. Also, I don't know if you have a similar problem, but eventually I was able to connect to the gigabeat room, but when I put it in the windows media player mode, my computer didn't detect anything. For that, I had to right click on My Computer, Manage, and then go under Device Manager (left). On the right, you'll see a list in which you'll find the toshiba gigabeat. If it has a yellow ? or ! then go ahead and right click on it and try to have windows detect the driver itself. That solved the second issue for me, and my computer was able to install the driver itself and now my gigabeat is at least detected properly and connecting to my computer. My current issue is different now where 15 GB of my music is unplayable due to some library updating failure :( Anyway, hope the earlier part solved your problem. Also, make sure when you run the update firmware, you follow the instructions correctly. Good luck.
Sounds like a built in glitch ... You might want to take it back under manufacturer's warranty and get a completely different MP3 Player/iPod, because it sounds like a scamming item - for $400 I'd demand answers.
It may sound a bit cheeky, but I find reputable models, like Goodmans, JVC and Sony work without a problem, and buying cheaper models with mass GB space would seem a bit too good to be true.
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard
I've got the install CD that has gigabeat room 2.02 - US version. if someone wants it - email me the request and I'll email a zip of the whole CD. it's only 29 MB (kelly . piper . cherokee at gmail . com) remove spaces...
