Do the tapes play in the machine, but you don't get a picture. Or do they not even start to play?

If they play and you don't see a picture then you need to clean the VCR head. You can get a tape head cleaning tape for this.

If the VCR won't play a tape at all, please describe in more detail what happens when you insert a tape for playback and I or someone else at Fixya will help you further.

Jvc minidv cassette not working display saying end tape does this mean tape has come loose.
End tape means that you have recorded the full 60 standard play or 90 minutes long play and you should rewind the tape or eject it.

Playing Tape to End Requires Head Cleaning Every Time
it seems your tracking needs to be looked at.also have a look at the tape open front section button at side slide open with your finger.look at the tape toward the light,if the edge of the tape is a bit wavey not straight you will need an alighnment as well.

Sony DCR-TRV460 not playing back, blue screen
Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if a blue screen is displayed when attempting to playback video from the camcorder.
  1. Stop the tape.
  2. Ensure the tape has been rewound to the beginning of the video recording.
  3. Play the tape.
  4. If the issue is not resolved, stop the tape and remove it from the camcorder.
  5. Clean the video heads of the camcorder using a dry head cleaning cassette.IMPORTANT: Follow the instructions for use provided with the head cleaning cassette. It may be necessary to use the head cleaning cassette more than once per session.
  6. Reinsert the tape into the camcorder.
  7. Play the tape.
  8. If the issue is not resolved, stop the tape and remove it from the camcorder.
  9. Insert a different tape with video footage into the camcorder.
  10. Ensure the tape has been rewound to the beginning of the video recording.
  11. Play the tape.
NOTES:
  • If a blue screen is still displayed, then the camcorder may require service .
  • If the tape plays back correctly, then the first tape may be faulty or there is a problem with the video recording.

Hi8 Playback Problem
Clean the tape heads and see if that makes a difference.  If that doesn't work, it could be the tape motor is going out.  Thats typical behavior when that happens.

No playback on DCR-TRV103
In playback mode the lCD displays the battery time, hi8 symbol and the tape counter. all the functions work the tape will play, rewind, fast forward. The screen stays blank on playback and the tape counter stays at 0:00:00 eventhough I can see the tape turning. I also hooke the camera to my tv and I got no picture.

Irrational Battery message on Sony GV-D1000 My Sony GV-D1000, which has worked just fine for years, now exhibits this behavior: Whenever I try to rewind more than a few minutes on the tape, it stops, displays the message "For InfoLithium Battery Only" and then shuts itself off. NOTE: I have never used a battery with this deck, I power it only with the supplied power adapter. It is my editing deck.
