My viewing screen suddenly went black and it won't take any pictures now. I know that because I can view past pics I've taken, but no new ones show up.

Did you switch to Tv (shutter mode) and took pictures for several seconds? like in the dark? Because saving the picture can take as long as the shutter time was.
Before panic. (Actually you never should panic) check your camera in automatic mode. And make sure you did not select any power save action, that puts your display on dark while shooting.
But always be sure your battery is charged and check its capacity. In the menu yo can check under the wrench symbol, when you select Battery info. Page 268 of the manual.
Working with a bad battery can damage the camera in the end.
Unless you've found a VERY rare 4GB SD card, your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. The 610 will not work with SDHC cards. Try using an SD card, 2GB and smaller.
your dead right the lens is closed when the unit is turned on a small latch pulls away a black sheld that stops light (direct) from damaging the lens these latches fail some times and are real expensive to have fixed

It is not possible to buy a viewing screen for KODAK cameras. There is no firmmware update available online.
An Out of Warranty repair for this model for this fault is about 88 pounds + shipping. KODAK also offers a Trade up option where you will have the opportunity to trade up to a newer model 25-30% cheaper than the market price.
When you say you can view pictures. Do you mean you can view them on the lcd on the camera itself or on your computer? It sounds like the CCD chip went bad most likely. If its not under warranty I would consider purchasing a new camera. Thank you, Lee
canon has a recall on this camera. call them and they will send you a box to send it back. If you are one of the lucky ones the will send you a canon s5is back...really nice camera
