I have the same machine first they said replace the micro switch i did then rebuild the water valve did not enough gas presure had it checked revented the unit the unit is brandnew relubed the water valve idk
All tankless and tank-type gas water heaters require regular cleaning and maintenance. It is unknown if your unit needs maintenance or repair parts, but catching up on maintenance using information from manual is good place to start. Gas appliances are increasingly complicated and experienced technician is good resource to have in local area before installing tankless.
Possible flow sensor issue. Check to see if your water pressure fluctuates a lot or is fairly steady. These units are sensitive to the pressure. take care.

The manual says to hold a match near the pilot while the ignitor is
trying. It says that if the unit lights the pilot orifice may be dirty
or clogged. Then the manual says to check
the voltage on the igniter. It should be 1.3 volts DC minimum if it is not means the electronic control box is defective.

It is most likely the water valve stuck open, telling the controls to heat water, that it thinks is flowing through it, but without actual flow it overheats. Depending on how comfortable you are with taking it apart yourself, you could open the valve to see if it just needs cleaned out, or if you have a ruptured diaphragm or some other cause.
