Defrost coil looked red hot in freezer

Opened freezer and on the bottom shelf I noticed that the coil was red hot and I have never noticed that before. I shut the freezer door and checked a few minutes later and it was no longer red hot. Is it normal for the (defrost heater coil?) to do this. Im not sure if the freezer is supposed to do this and I just never opened the freezer before when it was hot. I appreciate a quick response.

I have a Kenmore upright freezer model# 253.9260210. We noticed that our food was starting to thaw. I opened up the coil area and noticed a small piece of ice on the coils. I melted the ice and turned...

Feel top of the compressor and tell me how hot after it has been running awhile. I need also that you advance the defrost timer=>. 216517400 Defrost Timer

clockwise slowly untill the compressor stops or starts. I need to make sure the timer is not stuck into defrost. I want you to leave the compressor off for up to 35 minutes. If the freezer compressor doesn't restart bt then simply again turn the timer clockwise slowly until it does and then stop turning. The defrost timer is location 23 in this photo HERE If you need to turn the defrost timer like this to restart the compressor then replace the defrost timer and this will resolve the freezing problem. If not we move to the defrost heater location 14 in the sme photo=> 216254600 Defrost Heater

Coils frozeup and iced on top shelf of freezer---did a defrost--when shut the door don't hear the shhhh sound-nothing blocking it and seal is good--light is on but won't freeze any food--threw out alot! ...

Defrost the unit totally so you can see no more ice, may take a day or more with door open, once done, restart the unit, check you can hear the fan running in the freezer, if not, replace fan unit, if you can hear it, the defrost timmer may have failed or the defrost element has gone. If the unit appears to work correctly, dont be fooled, the problem will return, if the unit does not work as it should, regas is required. Hope that helps.

Dont forget to vote for the solution, thankyou

There is a red glow from coil at bottom back of freezer that I can see through slats from inside. There is a sizzling water drip happening.

there is an element in there for self-defrosting, if you have a self-defrosting model. It heats up like an oven element ( not nearly as hot) to get rid of frost build up.

Heard a sound coming from freezer, i opened it up and at the back of freezer towards the bottom, coils are red and hot when I put my hand up there, i've never noticed this before, what should i do?

That is normal. The fridge went into a defrost mode. The red and heat is the defrost heater melting away the ice build up on the evaporator coil. The fridge will automatically do this every so many hours. This usually last about 20 minutes or so . Here is a link for replacing a defrost heater http://appliancehelponline.com/defrostheatervideo.html

Side of freezer seems warm

Hi!!

Don't worry about the line, it is supposed to be the way it is. If you are talking about the condenser coil, located on the back bottom part of the unit, with a small fan in front of it, yes, it is supposed to be hot.

The condenser job is to disipate the heat absorbed by the evaporator (the coil inside the freezer). Make sure the condenser is clean and condenser fan is working, also, make sure there is air circulating thru the back of the unit to help cooling the condenser.

The noises you hear, are probably the defrost coil melting the ice on the evaporator, this function is on a timer and happens 3 or 4 times a day.

Good Luck!!

The top shelf in my upright freezer ices up badly; but the rest of the freezer is great - no ice! What causes this and is there something I can put on that shelf to keep the ice from building up.

If this is the type of freezer where the shelves are the evaporator coils, the coolant goes through the shelves(tubing) and the formation of frost is normal and has to be manually defrosted. All the shelves should be as cold asd the top one. The fact that just one has any frost may indicate that it is low on freon. If this is the case you should notice that the freezer doesn't get cold enought.

Evaporator coil in freezer red hot and water dripping on it.

This normal operation. Happens twice a day to defrost the freezer coils. Last about 20 minutes.

Upright freezer not cooling

The model number would help but it sounds like a sealed system leak or restriction. If thats the case I would not suggest trying this yourself. The water should freeze overnight and the frost should keep going to all the shelfs that have coils in them.
