How can i install windows mobile 6.5 on a dell axim x51v?
I'm starting the same thing myself. It looks complicated unless you do
a lot of Pocket PC stuff. I've done a fair amount myself, but this is
my 1st foray into the "cooked" ROM arena. Looks like Lenny's L14 is the
best, it's wm6.5 for some technical reason I believe. MobilitySite.com
has been an outstanding source of info for many of my undertakings
& issues! AximSite Forum 1
Forum 2 has been rolled into MobilitySite and it was great too. Below are a few of the links I've been referring to.
Be AAAAAABSOLUTELY sure to backup your data!!! SPB backup has been
great for our brood - it even lets you go cross device which you'll
esentially be doing. Backup to a BLANK formatted SD card! The B/U is
self extracting and very configurable both in and out. I lost a serious
amount of stuff (life) when I restored & ActiveStink tried to sync
my card with an empty database! My fault I'm sure, but still reeeeealy
hurts. :(
Scared?? You should be, that shows you've got some common
sense. Aside from data loss, you can brick your x51v if something goes
wrong. That costs a bit to fix, I guess they have to physically go in
and re-flash the ROM. Never tried it personally... ;)
As my good friend Miguel used to say, "GOO' LUCK FELLA!"

UPDATE: There is an image out there somewhere that a forum member came up with that allows a bricked Axim to boot from an SD card, AND IT WORKS! Unfortunately, I lost the link to it (and other things in my divorce)!
As for the SDHC (> 2 Gig) ceiling, there's a driver you can add to your boot file to allow up to 4 or 8 Gig SDHC cards.

The only way to install windows mobile on your axim x51v is to get ahold of a ROM specifically for that model. the operating system is still only in beta testing so even if you do find the ROM there will be no support and it could be buggy. If you can find a ROM you just have to put it on a 1 or 2 gig SD card. it cannot be an SDHC card. then you press the power button, reset button on the back and the wireless button on the side all at the same time. this should start the ROM loader. just select the ROM on the card. it will then proceed to install it. you want to have the PDA plugged into AC power for this.
note that this process can be risky and if something does go wrong your PDA may be ruined and your on your own.
