Ghosting of the image

I have a 7 year old 1080p rear projection 55" tv. The image began ghosting. There is the normal picture with a "red ghost" behind slighlty shifted by about 2 inches. This occurs on all inputs and via cable, dvd, etc... so it is definitely not the input device. It appears as though all the colors are still there (red green and blue), but maybe one shifted??? i was watching the tv while it happened. it first did it for about a minte then self fixed itself so i thought maybe it was the cable tv signal. Then it did it again and is now permenent. it makes tv watching painful...

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneerghosting of the image - 2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

Red ghosting on images that are not closeup

1. Power off -- let bulb cool.
2. Display - 5 - VOL+ - Power (in quick sequence) to display service menu.
3. Go into the user menu and set auto revision back to auto.
4. Put an image on the screen that shows the problem. I always found the edges of a 4:3 aspect ratio signal displayed the ghosting very well on my set.
5. Use 2 to scroll through the categories to find D GM TG
6. Use 1 to scroll through items in D GM TG to find V POS D
7. Write down current value.
9. Use 3 and 6 to change the value to minimize the ghosting. You should only need to move it up or down a value or two.
10. Press Mute - Enter to save the changes.
11. Power off and let the bulb cool.

Ghost red image

If you are connecting via HDMI, try either getting the firmware upgrade from the Philips website or switching to Component (Red, Green and Blue) cables.

Ghost images

Sounds like a light engine issue to me. Is there anyway you can post a picture of the issue itself?
