My tv has guidepost plus. The original remote was no longer operable, so I bought an universal one. With it, I am unable to turnoff guidepost. This tv is connected to a cable box. I tried going into menu and redoing setup. I reprogrammed my cable remote, but nothing brought the sound back. The tv is not muted.

Sounds like the manufacturer did an upgrade. You can look up the remote control codes for that TV. Turn the TV power on. Then using the codes you found set each one into the remote you have and check the functioning by trying to turn the TV off. If you are unable to see instructions for setting the codes into your new remote, or if they weren't supplied by the seller, you'll have to find it's manual online and follow those instructions. It could be that Toshiba used the same control model for more than one TV set model. Often just putting in batteries will work but when it doesn't you have to treat the remote as a universal remote. If you can't use the primary unit setting to work you can try to set it up as an"AUX" unit as you would do for a second TV.
A universal remote isn't a replacement for the original. The idea of these is to perform the basic functions of up to several pieces of electronic equipment to simplify life and reduce armchair clutter.
When the menu needs accessing it will be time to reach for the original remote.
If the original is lost or broken a dedicated replacement will need to be bought. I bought one from Amazon for my tv for little more than a universal.
If you whsh to get all functions operated with your TV, you must have its original remote control, and it is no doubt. No universal remote control will operate with all functions, that are supposed to be, especially to Sony Brands. You can buy the original remote control from the authorized service center for Sony, or from any authorized dealer for Sony. Then why do you go for an experiment

You can get the original remote on Ebay. I purchased one for my tv and it works great. Plus it's pink!!!! If I were you I would look there to see if you can get the original one, rather then messing around with universal ones!!!
Good Luck!
The origional remote is no longer available. However you can get the phillips universal remote at the following link. This is one of the best universal remotes available and easiest to program and will work 3 different items. This company ships for free http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/
I had a similar problem with a 1994 vintage Broksonic TV. I called the company (Hatzlachh Supply Inc. @ 800-333-9099). Broksonic TVs are not compatable with any universal remotes! You need an original factory remote. Remote for my set cost $20.00 plus shipping for a total of $24.95.
