Today, the sound stopped, in user preferences the mute box is ticked but unable to untick it. I have followed all instructions I can find to correct but nothing works. Next stage is visiting the apple store tomorrow
This is a widespread hardware issue with the MacBook Air. You are not alone. See: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1736638&tstart=15 Some users report that replacing the Audio Board Flex Cable corrects the problem, but others report that the correction is only temporary. If your machine is still under warranty, I would get it back to an Apple repair facility immediately. If it is not, you will still need to get it to a repair facility, but bring along the above URL and suggest that Apple treat it as a warranty extension issue.
Testimonial: "I have already had my macair repaired, I think the correct parts replaced were the audio board and cable, parts about Aus$30each and labour Aus$75"

There is a mini loudspeaker icon in the bottom right corner of the screen (system tray)
double click the icon - a box with all the components of the sound system will pop-up (Master Volume)
Untick any of the mini boxes along the lower part of the box that have a tick in them (click on the tick will 'untick' it - click on empty box, 'ticks' it)
That is the easiest way. BUT if you can't find the icon...
Go to Start - Control Panel - Sounds & Audio Devices
Double click that Icon and in the window that opens...
You will see two mini boxes Mute and Place volume icon in System tray
Untick Mute and Tick Put icon....
Simples...
