Follow steps below to reset Hewlett-Packard (HP) All-in-one Printers (products with keypads only). Resetting your printer will reset your printer to its original state. For products with keypads on the control panel: 1. Without turning the unit off, unplug the power cord from the back of the product. 2. Press and hold “# and 6′ keys. 3. While holding those keys plug the power cord back in. 4. Wait until the screen goes blank before you release those keys. 5. Follow on printer screen instructions. For Box-type models: 1. Unplug the power cord from the printer. 2. Wait for 30 seconds. 3. Plug the power cable back in the printer and turn it on.
as far as ink jets go i agree with you HP are pretty bad. However the HP color laser jets are second to none in my opinion. I work at a health care company and all we sell are HP laser jet printers. Sure the toner cost more money up front but page for page it's actually cheaper than having to buy all those ink jet refills. If you must have an ink jet printer I would try either a epson, cannon or lexmark. HERE is a good link to ink jet printer reviews

HP just wants to sell another printer. The "ink system failure" error is caused by air in the ink feed tubes. This happens when the ink in the cartridges goes run all the way out or you use poor quality refilled cartridges. In both cases the printer tries to pump ink but gets air instead. In less than 10 minutes you should be back printing again.

you should contact the hp support for this. if the printer is in warranty you might get a replacement as well because it is an issue with the printer itself.
