There is a possibilty its just a defective address board thats causing the issue. Can yoiu reply to my email address tvtek(at)msn.com with the complete model which will be on the side of the TV. It should be something like HPT5054X/XAA and I also need the serial number. Is the black bar on the left, center or right side of the screen? I need all that information to further assist...
hello,if the stripe goes completely thru the screen top to bottom, you most likely have a defective plasma panel. Other instances will require substitution of the drive boards(c boards) and rarely the control board.
Hi my name is Roety,
I can help you with your issue ,
The black strip is either a bad panel or part of the lower buffer board is bad. There are ribbon cables that run from the panel to the buffer it may just be a loose ribbon connector

seems like a lose ground issue from the vertical scan board which usually causes this problem. A scan board repair or replacement should fix this intermittent problem.....take it too your local repair shop before this problems spreads and the tv totally shuts down....
This is an old post but maybe it will help others. You will have to take the back off of the TV. On the bottom you will see ribbon cables coming from the screen and connecting to 3 PC boards. Take the screws out that holds the cable down. Underneath you will see 4 resistors marked 100. All you have to do is re-solder the resistors and your vertical line will be gone. You need to be good at soldering or you could damage the ribbon. The only ones that you have to re-solder is the ones in line with the lines on the screen.
Ok did this happen the first time u turn on the TV. ? If so u might have a ribbon cable disconnect from the logic or u might have a defective Plasma panel. If u have a defect like your describing the IC's on the panel short out and no longer work causing that section of the screen not to function. Only fix then is replace panel
IF THE LINE IS ABOUT 1INCH WIDE THE CHANCES ARE IT WILLBE YOUR PLASMA DISPLY THAT HAS GONE . WOULD BR CHEAPER TO BUY A NEW UNIT . HOWEVER TRY RINGING HITACHI EXPLAIN THE FAULT COMPLAIN THAT IT SHOULD OF LASTED LONGER THAN THE WARANTY AND SEE WHAT THEY WILL DO ABOUT IT
