If the coil is not iced up then it is not a defrost problem but rather if the coils are not completely cold all over then the compressor is failing or the refrigerant has leaked out.

My ice cream maker spins but not making icecream

* Ice cream makers are small tub partial filled with cream, sugar, and flavor.
* This cream tub is placed inside a larger bucket containing ice and salt (usually rock salt). The salt makes the melted water almost as cold as the ice. (colder than regular unsalted water)
* Creme in contact with the metal tub gets frozen and creates a layer of frozen creme around the tub.
* The frozen creme is soft due to the fat in the creme preventing the liquid from freezing hard.
* Scraping away the semi frozen cream allows more liquid cream to freeze on the cleaned sides of the inner tub.
* with continuous scraping the cream will form a semi frozen "Milkshake" like thick liquid. It will not harden as the large ice bucket would have melted all the ice by then.
* Remove the semi-frozen cream. Serve immediately or pack in container to continue freezing cream. It should harden when left over nite in freezer.

I have a 12 year old sub zero 590 side by side. The freezer is not working well.ice is fine but ice cream is very soft. Meats and others are not so hard either.

Jai,
If the ice is still frozen after any time the temp is below 32. But thats not cold enough as you know. Target temp in such a freezer is between +10 to 0 F inwhich ice cream is good and firm. BTW many restaurants and food pro's set and judge the freezer temp by the firmness of ice cream! A twelve year old Sub Z should not be having such problems and causes could be numerous. Lets talk about what you can do. This is a built in unit correct? Ok, get your step ladder and remove the cover above the doors and look for a dirty coil, a failed fan, or both. If the coil is dirty enough to restrict air flow or fan not blowing this IS a problem! One that will cause such problems and is my bet to whats going on.

My Whirlpool Freezer/Refrigerator model# ET19RMXGW02 is not keeping items cold. The ice maker is not working. There is frost in on the back wall of the freezer but objects like ice cream are all soft. ...

your evaporator coil behind this frost on the wall is iced up and you cant blow cold air through solid ice, remove this panel and defrost the coil, then check the defrost heating element below the coil, the defrost thermostat located on the coil or the defrost timer itself for being defective

I have an Amana Side by Side. The freezer section

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air
check defrost heater, defrost thermostat. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the adaptive defrost control.Part 13 on this diagram of your fridge controls. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=ASD2625KES&productCategoryId=0165000&brandId=1268&modelName=AMANA-REFRIGERATOR&diagramPageId=00005&componentDescription=CONTROLS&documentId=M0612301&backToLink=Return%20to%20Sub%20Components%20list

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

Refrigerator not cold enough(65*)

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

Bottom of freezer/fridge only getting cold.

Thre is a fan inside the freezer which circulates the cold air around both the fridge and the freezer compartments.
You should be able to feel cold air blowing around the inside, particularly at the top of the freezer.
If the defrost thermostat fails open, the internal fan (depending on freezer) will stop and this can be the cause of the freezer being warm at the top and no ice.
You say the bottom of the freezer is blowing cold, but are you sure its blowing, as it can feel like a cold blow. Of course the fan could have failed or may be the defrost heater itself.
Have a look at this site for some useful trouble shooting
