If the hard-drive is losing connection even after removal you should test to make sure that the drive is still functioning.
Try to see if your system has an on-board diagnostic, (f12 on startup, before the windows loading screen) this will tell you if the hard-drive itself is actually broken, or if it is just a connection.
Whenever you do an operating sytem reinstallation, windows itself will only have the basic drivers, and that will not include the network drivers for you to be able to connect to the internet (especially in windows XP). If thats the case you can use another system which has internet connection and go to http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/migr-46258.html to download the driver for your LAN. Save it into a flash drive and install it to the system that you just did an OSRI. Restart the system and try connecting with the cable initially to the router to have internet connection.
I do not think there is a switch, however some of the T40's came without a wireless card installed, but was optional. Here are the part numbers if you need them to order one.

Try to restart the Services of Wireless Zero Configuration or Wireless Auto configuration in the Services Section. To open service, type "services.msc" in the run command.
Hi it sounds like your driver is missing or corrupt , this may be the case if u have recently installed windows, go to control panel click on sytem icon then click on device manager button under the hardware tab, have a look then under network adapters to see if there is a yellow warning icon if so make a note of the name and you should be able to download the driver from this location. its near the bottom under networking wireless.
