We found that by removing the front panel and vacuuming the accumulated lint on the inside of the dryer and the door, the problem was resolved. There were no parts to replace, just vacuuming.
I purchased a Maytag Performa washer in 2003 and experienced the same thing. A service call found a loose electrical connection behind the switch panel. The washer has worked fine since.
