Hi, Your response (very appreciatted) address a single message while I'm trying to import the hole WinMail Inbox folder which includes many sub- folders back to Outlook Express 6.

bottom line instead of porting a single message (.eml) how can I import the full inbox?

Outlook Express does not display any message attachments if TNEF-encoded file (winmail.dat) was received. If you are expecting some attachment, but do not see any, it still can be there.

To decode such a message perform the following steps:

  1. Save the whole e-mail message to an *.EML file via File, Save As, or Drag-and-drop.
  2. Open the *.EML file in a text editor such as Wordpad or Notepad.
  3. Locate the line Content-Type: application/ms-tnef;, and change the Content subtype to something else, such as Content-Type: application/zzz;
  4. Locate the line name="winmail.dat" and change to name="winmail.tnf". You may change the winmail part as well, if desired.
  5. Save the *.EML file from the text editor.
  6. Double click the *.EML file from the Windows File Explorer. This will open the message in a mail window and the TNEF attachment should now be available for saving.
  7. Drag the saved attachment into the Winmail Opener program. Decoded attachments will then be there and can be dragged or opened.

Why are jpg attachments showing up as winmail.dat files on my iPhone?

I haven't seen much directly relating to jpg formats becoming winmail.dat files, but it seems with the new iphone ios7 operating system, many other types of RTF and PDF sorts are coming in as winmail.dat files and who's to blame at the moment might be unknown. Some blame Microsoft while others are isolating it down to the new ios7.

I'll keep looking but this is what i found so far...

I have windows mail and would like outlook express. Is there somewhere I can download it for free or do I have to buy a program?

If you have Windows Mail, you no doubt are running Windows Vista. Sorry, but Outlook Express is not supported in Vista. You are stuck with Windows Mail or a third-party mail client. FYI, I use Thunderbird and am quite satisfied. It works with Windows XP through Windows 7

Transfering mail setup from Windows xp to a windos vista machine with EasySuite

I'm not 100% sure about vista because I hate it but I can help you copy all of your outlook express data to a CD\DVD disk & your address book. Your network settings for express account is a phone call to your ISP.
If vista's explorer is set up like XP you should be able to copy your data into outlook express.
Open all these folders on you XP system.
User name\Application Data\Identities\{xxxxxxx}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Copy the Outlook Express folder to your CD.
User name\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book. Copy Address Book folder.
Making sure you have everything.
Open, User name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{xxxxxxx}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Compair the two Outlook Express folder files. CD will not allow copy of same named folder.
If Vista's lay out is the same as XP than copy Outlook Express folder to Vista.
Suggest you have your current ISP setting /account setup before copying to Vista

Let me know if this works for you!
Good Luck & Kind Regards.

Regd the .dat file

You cannot open a data file this is only read by a programme or the operating system, but what may have happened is that you have been sent a file for which you do not have a programme for it to open with and windows has use the.dat as default. If you know who sent it and what file it is suppost to be, ask them what file it is eg a picture or video file and use one of your own programmes to open it using the right click and 'open with' method.
