I'm trying to replace a single pole switch that controls a bathroom light with a combination switch/ receptacle in a 50's vintage lake house. The old switch seems to be dedicated to the light fixture, with only one black hot and one neutral white, fairly new romax wiring. The switch has a stacked copper and silver lug on the right side and 2 black and a ground lug on the left, the 2 black lugs are linked with a tab. I can't find a combination that seems to work. I want the switch to control the light and receptacle to be live if possible. I can gain access to the wiring behind the wall if necessary, since I will be redoing the wall anyway.
You cannot replace the switch with a switch/receptacle combo because there is no neutral wire. The black and white that you see are both used as hot wires. One is the Line and the other is the Load.
You have to install another 2 wire cable or replace the existing with a 3-wire cable. A 3-wire cable has a black, red, and white, plus the bare ground wire
