Error 90 Communication Error between SY board and KY board in SONY VO-9850P/VO-9800 VCR is due to faulty SY board. Replace SY board or repair SY board if you have enough experience of electronics repair down to the component level.
This is usually the first indication that the head drum assembly needs attention. Usually, the circuit that controls the speed of the heads is not able to keep the speed constant. This creates noise in the signal that causes the loss of color. The circuit in question here is the servo. This is often fixed by replacing the capacitors in that circuit (there are usually 3). Simple fix with a parts cost of around $6 or so.
There is a converter called the YCP-688 that did exactly this-- converted the Y/C 688 signal coming out of the Umatic deck to a Y/C 358 signal that any modern device with a s-video port (VCR, edit deck, capture card) could accept. The company went out of business in 2007 , don't know if they are still for sale-- here's a link to it- http://www.smithav.com/ycplus/docs/688.pdf
No, this U-Matic VO-9800p ist a PAL Model, it only Records in SP and High Band Mode. If a SP Tape is inserted, it Records SPMode, otherwise High Band. Low Band Mode is only for Playback ! (Low Band Playback is of very poor Quality, do not use this for Digital DVD Captureing )
this sounds like the belts on the take-up pinch wheel if it's streached then it's going to be fast if you can find all belts that take tape to drum and read heads then check each one if streached replace if all fails when replaced belts then it needs repair.
hope this works
